Hi I need help quick. I'm doing some practice cakes that we're donating to a bake sale where my husband works tommorow. I've just sent him to the store and I just realised I forgot to tell him to get me more vegtable oil. I'm so screwed any ideas what I can use to replace vegtable oil in a cake mix. Please help or my husband will kill me. I was thinking melted shortening might do it or butter? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A lady i take care of always uses margerin(spelled wrong) instead of oil in here cake mixes and brownies but i have never tried it yet. She says "I have done it for 94 years so it must work". But i have never tasted it either. Hope this helps!
1 stick of melted butter can subsitute the 1/3 cup of oil. YOu can also use milk instead of the water. That should work well!

You will think this is strange but apple sauce is a great substitute for oil. I sometimes use it in a pinch.
My Grandmother sometimes used mayonaise as a substitute.
I was going to say applesauce, too. Use the same amount as you would the oil. Makes the cake even more moist. I use it all the time. Also cuts back on the fat.
I had a student suggest silken tofu or cream cheese (never tried personally), but you are probably more likely to have apple sauce on hand ...lol....
