You know how we drive ourselves crazy on what type of cakes to make and how to ice them for tasting samples? Read on.......

Did you watch the wedding weekend on the Food Network? Out of the whole weekend the biggest tip I gained was watching Disney's Wedding show. I absolutely loved how they handled sampling cakes. This is exactly how I'm going to do it from now on.

For those who did not catch it:

They had only a few flavors of UNDECORATED cake out (I think 3-4) with one slice of each on each plate. Then they had samples of icings and fillings all in little plastic condiment cups (think ketchup at Wendy's). The potential customers mixed and matched as they wished. I thought... duh!!!! Why have we been agonizing all this time on what sort of decorated cake and icing flavors to present???? This was a perfect idea!!

Then we have our portfolio to show our style and we're done.

I really like this idea, and it gives a more "custom-built" feel to the bridal couple.

I also saw that. I thought it was a great idea. thumbs_up.gif I like how they had a bar set up in the kitchen for them also. I have a bar and could use it for the sampling as well. It also lets them see how clean your kitchen can be too. Just in case they are skeptical.
The whole Disney wedding was so magical for the couple that did the Cinderella theme. WOW what a lot of $$$$$ icon_surprised.gif for just one wedding.

I watched food tv off & on all weekend but I missed that one! That is a great idea! That will help you alot!! The instructor that taught me to decorate was on the wedding cake contest that was in Oklahoma! She was the judge!! I didn't know she was going to be on it. Boy was I excited when I saw her!!! I'd love to be a judge! But I need to know a whole lot more about cakes/deco to be one!

$70,000 for those who didn't watch.

Money aside, there was too much going on for me to enjoy my wedding like that.

But I did like the whole set up of the tasting. It went much more smoothly than what put ourselves through now.

I saw that too...what a fantastic idea! I was surprised they only offered 3 cake flavors--yellow, chocolate and fudge marble. I guess the fillings are what really make the cake.

Did you see the whimsical cake made for the tea party? It was incredible. The pastry chef said it took several people to complete the cake and that if one person were to do it all, it could take a week! It makes me so proud of all of you who take on huge cake projects all by yourselves--start to finish!

I've always said many decorators offer way too many choices. I offer white and chocolate. Period. They can have a marbled if they wish. They can use the flavors I add by using flavored creamers. But basically it's white and chocolate. They get varieties in the icing and fillings. I also remind the bridal couple they are trying to please however many guests they have invited.. not just themselves (although some brides are very selfish). It's best to keep it extremely simple. The most compliments on cake I hear at weddings is when it's a simply flavored cake.

Yes, I wasn't any more impressed with it than cakes I see here and the other boards we frequent. It looked pretty standard to me compared to what we do here...I was expecting over the top from the so-called experts.
