So I'm trying some salted caramels because 1. I love them and want another option besides cookies to eat during the holidays - and 2. to serve to guests that we have on Christmas Eve as well, i guess :P

Anyways - i need a candy thermometer and was all set to buy just whatever one from michaels and then i saw reviews and 3 stars due to temp accuracy. So i guess i can't just buy any old one?

That being said - can anyone recommend their brand?

Look for a thermometer that has instructions for calibrating and adjustment.

You can also confirm a temperature with the drop-of-syrup-into-cold-water test. The first few times with a new thermometer, use both methods.
