AOK wait, the best part about that is the cake they have on there looks like a rainbow exploded on it - beautiful cake but COME ON. its the EXACT OPPOSITE of clean and modern. OMG I'm laughing so hard right now I just woke the baby.

AI love it when they use "Clean" as an adjective for food. It's like they think last years brides were clamoring for dirty, messy cakes.

I saw that and I KNEW I had to post it here. Yep FromScratchSF, you called it!
ATo be fair, the HuffPost blurb on cakes said:
"The cake style that dominates right now is clean and modern with just one amazing pop of embellishment such as a bow, monogram or flower. The other major look takes the opposite tack, using eye-popping color or all-over appliqués. And finally, a traditional idea has come around again: Brides are loving cakes that mimic wedding-dress details like lace." Photo Credit: Cake Power
This is actually not bad news!
I'm so tired of vintage, rustic cakes. I welcome modern, or colour, or appliqués! I'm even happy enough with piping and lace details. Just not...rustic.
AI always get asked "I've ordered with you before, will my cake be cheaper?" Uhhh.... NO! Just because buy sugar at the supermarket doeant mean its cheaper for me when ever i go back to buy more. Or "This cake is cheaper at Staderbros." Then why dont you go and get it there.
AI would do rustic cakes all day, no icing smoothing involved. Slap that on, get paid and move along.
I suspect that "clean and modern" is just going to be another code word for "cheap because the magazines say that the simpler a cake the less work you have to do and the less I can pay you." They'll say they want something clean and modern then show you a picture of a cake with lace piped all over the entire surface. You know, "something simple."
AYup- rough-iced with one big peony. Fast and furious and a great hourly wage. I did several hundred of those last year - thus the urge to yuk.

I haven't done that many of them yet, so I'm not quite at yuk at this point! The "great hourly wage" part still outweighs the gag reflex. I do gag at the pearls and swirls, I've done way too many of those.

Brayan~~Think I'll try this tactic with my plumber the next time I call.
Its is quite stunning just what people think they should pay for a custom cake, ive been ''told'' before that making a cake cant be that hard and it doesn't cost that much..... ohhh really well why dont you make it then ;) lol - Answer becuase you cant and that why you need to pay for it to be made for you.
Wow...RUDE! Definitely a no cake for you list recipient. What drives me crazy is when my husband takes a day off from work when I'm working, and decides that he wants to come into the kitchen and have a conversation. I've told him that it doesn't look like I'm doing anything, but I'm always either counting or concentrating on something, depending if I'm baking or decorating. He used to work from home too, so that was worse, at least now he goes to the office and I can have some silence while I'm concentrating!
You're lucky. My husband is retired and I have to wait until late at night to work on my cakes. He scoffs at me when I tell him I'm concentrating and can't have a conversation. Drives me crazy.
Although she should be thankful you are bringing a dessert, most people I know do not like fondant--so I would not be offended if someone made that request.
What a great thread, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!!
It left me with a clean and modern, yet moist and fluffy glow!
Just wanted to let you know it was so much fun I had to join to say so... even if I didn't get the first post either.. seemed like a reasonable question to me... must have missed something.
Rant:
I told a friend I would be testing out a design on a dummy cake. She goes, "what's that?" I tell her it's a styrofoam 'cake' that cakers use to practice designs and stuff. She goes, "you mean all those big display cakes in the cake boutiques are not real? I'm no longer impressed."
REALLY? I didn't know where to begin with her. Do people really expect their baker to have multiple 4-tier mounds of rotting cake sitting in the store as displays? I couldn't even be bothered to explain to her that it takes just as much skill to decorate a dummy as a real cake. #lostcause

Geez...I've noticed something similar: I had 4 dummy wedding cakes (2, 3, and 4 tiers) as displays in my cake room. I had more than a dozen people say something like, "Wow, nice cakes, are they real?" to which I'd answer "No they're display cakes, so the inside is styrofoam". The response invariably was crestfallen look and a dismissive "Oh", like they were expecting fresh yummy cake I might carve up in front of them.
Even though I don't do cakes professionally the one I always loved from the professionals was the brides that come in and say "I want something really different", and then pick the cake that everyone other bride for the last year has picked. Sounds like rustic may have been this for the last so long.
Oh, I just finished a dummy 3-tier wedding cake. I guess I won't mention it unless asked.
AWe get that attitude a lot, also. We have display cakes in the shop and people ALWAYS ask if they are real. We say no, but they're all covered and decorated exactly as if they were real - with sugarpaste and edible decor.
The general public is incredibly dismissive when they find out the cake models aren't real cake. They have just no idea of the time, patience and skill it takes to make a bespoke cake - real or not.
I have a retail shop also, and people always ask if we' ve made roysl icing or sugardough decorations ourselves (the packaged ones we sell in yhe shop). They are so dismissive when we say no, theh are factory-made and packaged. Honestly - do they really think that we have the time to pipe and professionally package all those pirate (or whatever) decorations? Not to menton the price! No way can vi prepare and color that much royal and sit there piping all those pirate heads by hand for that cheap!
I get this one too! from family... like F*** off... this is my business.. how about support me and buy a damn cake!
jeeze
How about asking for your recipes! Umm... No, I don't share my recipes. Like I can walk into a restaurant and ask for their recipes? "Umm, excuse me McDonald's but can you give me the recipe for a Big Mac so that I can make it myself and not spend any money on your product. That would be great!" LOL

I remember a thread on here where the couple were at a tasting and the bride to be asked if the baker ever froze cakes before hand, the baker replied after the tasting you tell me...I thought yeah how did that cake you just ate taste?
My wonderful mother in law works with several woman she has no second thoughts of calling me and inform me that she needs a birthday cake for such and such due the next day...ok let me drop everything just for you
My mother does this to me... and throws in a token... "it's like advertising"... uh!? as if any of her co-workers have ever ordered a cake from me!
I had a lady come and meet with me about a cake. she tells me she wants a 3D hummer (truck - - for those of you with dirty minds ;-) with figurines. when i ask her how many people she said "I dont know, maybe 10". I advised I couldnt make the detailed cake she was describing that small and offered a round cake with a hummer on top. she didnt like that idea she definitely wanted a 3d hummer cake... make it as big as it needs to be. so when i gave her the price she said. "what?!? arent you just going to make it out of rice crispy square like they do on the shows. We arent going to eat it anyway" UGH!!!
1. if you wanted a rice crispy treat hummer why didnt you say that?
2. if would cost you more cause its more annoying
3. if you are not oging to eat it why dont you go buy him a toy hummer since that would be cheaper.
she ended up telling that she was going to ask a friend how makes cakes to make it. thanks for wasting my time lady! this was a few years ago when i was just starting so if she called and asked me about it now it would be more...lol
Yes I've had the "can you make the frosting not too sweet" question quite a bit...but one customer asked me if I would match the grocery store prices...Ummmm NO...I usually tell them if pricing is driving their decision then they should probably go ahead with the grocery store cake. Hahaha I just laugh thinking about that one. Guess they have to ask...
Some people don't understand they are paying for our skill and experience. Just like a hair stylist or plumber...I had a groom's mom come to my shop and say the Bride's friend was taking a Wilton cake decorating class and would make the wedding cake for them...the mom said..."Definitely not at my son's wedding" I think the shows make it look so easy...but it's a skill that is build through time!
ALast week I got a voicemail that said she was calling to price cakes, but she'd probable just make something herself anyway, but figured she'd get some ideas from me on what to do. I thought about calling back and telling her there was no effing way I was going to waste my time with her, but figured that would waste my time too, and deleted her voicemail.
AAnother I had today that really killed me was a lady showed up to get her groupon cupcakes 6 hours late, 5 minutes after I sent them out the door with someone else, and says, "that's okay, I can just go to the store and you can make more. Or I guess you could just make a cake."
Umm, I make everything custom, you're SOL.
