Hi All, I just got my cake safe and before my wedding cake coming up next saturday, I decided to do an experiment and set up a dummy tiered cake set up to see how much force I would need to use to get the center rod down through all those wrapped cardboard tiers without the cake(I use 1/2 inch foam core under each tier). So, I set everything up (pillars and all) and noticed that it did take some great effort for the rod to go through all the layers but it did. Looked great! Then when I went to take the rod out, just like I would at a delivery, that sucker was not moving without lifting up the layers of cardboard along with it. It seemed extremely hard to get that rod back out! I know that the weight of the cake will help keep the cardboard from coming up with the rod but I am REALLY scared that when I go to pull the center rod out of the cake at delivery, the cake will also want to lift up and it will separate my already finished tiers, ripping frosting boarders away from the cakes below it! Should I be worried about this? Has this happened to anyone? Or has anyone had any problems getting that center rod out of the cake at delivery?
Thanks for your help!
Why would you remove the center rod on delivery? I leave mine in and they come out when the cake is being disassembled for cutting.
The central rod goes down below the baseplate and way above the top of the top tier. I don't think KoryAK has seen a cake safe. You said you tried it with cake dummies and that's the problem, they're light as feathers so there's no weight to keep the plates under them from coming up with the pull of the rod. Real cakes will be much different. I don't have a Cake Safe but my friends do and they swear by it.
Yes, your problem is the dummies. The density of the styro is waay more dense than the cake. The rod will lift out of the cake no problem. It will also take less force to get through the cake than the dummies.
I would grease up the rod before putting it in the cake. This really helps. Also, make sure your cakes aren't frozen in the center. I had that happen on accident because of someone bumping the thermostat on my dry fridge, and let me tell you- frozen carrot cake and a steel rod do NOT want to let go of each other!!
Thank you! My husband made the same comment tonight. He said to spray the rod lightly with Pam spray before putting it through the cakes. Makes sense. It just freaked me out when the rod was not moving when trying to take it out without separating everything. I did not want to imagine that happening with the real cake!
Before you take the top off the safe and the black handle at the top, just turn the rod at the same time as lifting, just enough to get it out of the base board. once that has cleared the rod, stop and remove the black handle, the top core thingy and then you can lift and turn the rod out.
You're right, I guess I totally skimmed over the cake safe piece of your puzzle and was thinking of a regular dowel. Sorry!
Just make sure you slowly twist the rod out. My instructions came with a sticker added that said to twist or it would be possible to pull off the smaller top tier.
