I'm sooooo aggravated! I was just finishing up making a double batch of my BC and my mixer just stopped. It's a Sunbeam and I bought it almost exactly a year ago!!! I had to finish mixing up the BC with a hand mixer and that was a complete aggravation!!!

When I bought it (my first stand mixer) I didn't want to spend the money on a KA because I just bake for friends & family. But I didn't realize at the time how MUCH I would be baking and decoration.

So now I have to buy a new mixer...I'm going to go with a KA, but will have to look for a lower end model because I really don't have the $$ and I have cakes to make!!!

Oh and as a side note, on the same day my camera also broke...what a start to the weekend. Thanks for reading my ramble... icon_sad.gif

Aggravating! But since you say it just shut off, it might have overheated. (The cycle time on my KA is ten minutes. Manufacturer recommends not running it longer than that, particularly for "heavy" mixing.) If it has fully cooled down, try turning it on. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Hope it works out for you!!!

Well it has sat overnight and still nothing. The light comes on so I know it's getting power, but the motor makes absolutely NO NOISE. Just an annoying silence...LOL! I had hoped it was overheated as well. Thank you anyway icon_smile.gif

If you are thinking of investing some money on a new machine, I would think of getting a BOSCH mixer.... I love them, and currently am drooling over them.
I hate the way the KA head is in the way, of adding ingredients to the bowl, and the bosch is not like that at all!! It actually has 2 beaters!! The bowl is wider and flatter, and comes with a lid you can use when mixing to avoid sugar baths! icon_smile.gif

My mixer went out like that, and it ended up just being a fuse that had blown. It might be worth having it looked at by repairman. I think it cost $20.00. I have had my kitchen aid for 8 years and it is still going.

You know what hon?

The same thing happened to me...and I cried. I am SO new to this whole decorating stuff but I've gotten busy fast - which means I spend far more than I make on supplies! Needless to say, buying a new mixer was not something I wanted to do.

Now I'm grateful. IDK how I lived without my KA!

There's always a bright side. icon_biggrin.gif

It's funny because my husband wanted me to buy a good KA a year ago. But I hated to spend that much money because I wasn't sure if I was going to get bored making cakes, etc. So I opted to go w/ an $80 Sunbeam which apparently couldn't handle double batches of anything after awhile. I so wish I would have listed to him because at the end of the day, I'm going to spend MORE than if I had just bought a better quality mixer to begin with. Live and learn icon_smile.gif

My sunbeam broke just before Christmas. Same thing, it just stopped in the middle of mixing royal icing thought I blew a fuse to!
I picked up a KA at Costco . They were on sale for $289 at the time. 2 days ago they had some more but they were back up to $389. I bought a Professional 550 HD or so it says on the side. Bigger than what I need for now. But its red, pretty and sits in a prized spot on my counter!
When I bought it I said to my daughter it was "my newest favorite thing" She said " I thought me and my brother were your faves" "well meet your new sister" I said!!!
We've named her Holly!

My beloved *ooooold* KA went out right after Christmas as well, and oh how it hurt! Right in the middle of a batch of IMBC. I didn't want to, but I forked out the $$ for a new one. I got mine from a store on Amazon, and with the shipping (I *never* use Amazon's free shipping...took me almost 2 weeks to get a book once), and the $40 rebate, I got it for less than I paid for my OLD mixer years ago!

So sorry dear.

The new Sunbeam mixers aren't made like they used to be. The old ones were comparable to a KA, but the new ones just aren't. I killed a couple of them before hubby bought my KA.

Check craigslist before you go buy a new one...hubby bought mine at Kohls for almost $400 including tax, but I bought another one on craigslist for $80, and an ancient one for $25, and both of those worked as well as the one he bought new.

I feel your pain. Last week my oven broke. It was suppose to be repaired on Wednesday and the repairman showed up on Wednesday without the part. Now I have to wait until Monday morning to get it fixed because they had to order the part. That same week, our car would not start and we had to put a new starter on. Someone said it comes in threes. I sure hope not.

I will have to check out Craigslist...thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure which model to get so I guess I will need to do some research. I'm a hobbyist, but I make about 2 cakes a month and a few batches of cupcakes each month too (mostly for my girls' preschool). I know I don't need the "top of the line" but I also don't want to get the lowest end either...I guess it's a good thing my tax rebate is coming this week! icon_smile.gif

Oh and I have to add that one of my good friends got a KA for Christmas. And she barely ever bakes or uses it. I make all the cakes for her childrens' birthday! I was soooo envious of that shiny mixer sitting on her counter....LOL! And it was the frosting for her daughter's cake that did my mixer in...she will get a kick out of that I'm sure (in a teasing funny way, not in a mean way LOL)!

I'd suggest getting as powerful/large as you can afford. My family gave me a KA when I got engaged. It was a little more powerful than my coworker's (who had given my mom the info), but I've nearly killed it with my double batches of buttercream. I tried to make fondant in it before, but it really struggled. For my birthday this year, my family gave me a KA 600 Pro. I've only made one cake since then, but it had no problem with the butercream (never even got hot, while my other one would have been burning up and smelling burnt by then!) and I made two batches of fondant with no problem.

My grandmother gave me her old KA mixer when she bought a new one. When it finally bit the dust a few years ago, I could have cried. But my DH went out and got me a new KA for Christmas about 5 years ago. I do homemade bread, fondant, double batches of frosting and cake mixes and cookies. I wouldn't trade it for anything or any other type of mixer on the market.
