A friend and I are making a graduation cake for her sister. The party is this afternoon. She made a gum paste rolled diploma. One of the rolls broke off this morning! What's the best way to repair it? Royal icing? More gumpaste? A "glue" of some sorts?

I don't know if you can repair it without the lines where it broke showing up. You might try repairing it using royal icing or gumpaste glue and then thinning down some royal icing colored to match the broken gumpaste and them paint the RI over the entire item and do it several times until the broken places are completely covered up. Look at my photos for the monogram letters I did. They are royal icing letters that have been repeatedly "painted" with RI and allowed to dry between coats. HTH's icon_smile.gif

I repair broken gumpaste (such as broken petals) with super glue.

There's not a lot you can do in a short amount of time... any type of repair needs hours to dry. You might need to use super glue and simply tell people the diploma is NOT to be eaten.

Thanks, everyone. We ended up disolving a bit of gumpaste in water and made a "glue". But, that took too long to dry. Then we decided that clear packing tape worked well! It held up wonderfully and no one could see the tape because the crack was under the rolled part.

Thanks again!

LOL, you should add a tube of super glue to your gumpaste toolbox. I could have told you that gum glue would not have worked, because you can't gum glue dry pieces to dry pieces. If your break was in a hidden spot, royal icing would have worked, but not gum glue.

If you start doing gumpaste flowers, you will not be able to use tape. icon_smile.gif

LOL, love the packing tape solution! I made a surfin' santa cake and santa's butt cracked in half (yes, I did just accidentally say butt cracked)...which then caused his torso to fall off...had to put that sucker back together with a glue gun set to low.

Superglue! Thunk (smacks forehead)...why didn't I think of that?!
