Okay this could have been a disaster but luckily I tried it out on a small piece of fondant first. The edible varnish recipe here on CC is horrible. Don't use it. It turns gummy on your fondant and if it's touched it pops right off but leaves a mess. Sort of like popping a bubble of chewing gum. Not so good for your cake. I just rubbed crisco lightly over the black pieces ( I made a zebra cake) and it turned out fine.

The only thing with Crisco is it will eventually soak into the fondant or gumpaste. Your best bet is to either by the edible varnish in a spray or get the confectionary glaze and dip them.
Jen Dontz sells the glaze and also thinner if you need something to not have so much shine to them. Her website is www.jenniferdontz.com
