I want to make a smash cake for my niece..........What's the best product to make the number "1" sparkle? How do I use it? Or maybe I should ask, what's the best way to use it? Thanks! You all are teaching me so much!

I would suggest disco dust.
What are you making the '1' out of? Fondant? gumpaste? Colorflo?
That will make a difference as to how it's used.

I was thinking just bc. Maybe just using the #21 star to make the "1", then trimming it with small dots. Not sure. I want it to look nice, but reality is...........she's only going to smash it and eat it! Hehe!

How shiny do you want it? Do you just want it to catch the childs eye? Bright colors and a colored sugar would work for that

I just want it to have some pretty sparkle! So it looks like it's glittery. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do you color the sugar? Should I put it on as soon as I'm done frosting it? New and trying to learn. Thanks, Shauna

If you're making the 1 from buttercream, you can top it with Wilton's colored sugars or edible glitter. http://www.wilton.com/store/site/department.cfm?id=3E304BE2-475A-BAC0-50804CBEDB29A58D&fid=3E305884-475A-BAC0-55BD05ECDB8D5B0B
Or the above mentioned "disco dust" is very glittery. http://www.countrykitchensa.com/catalog/mini.aspx?T=1&ShopId=38&CatId=624&SubCatId=1581
I would wait until the day of the party to apply the sugars or sparkles- sometimes the "absorb" into the buttercream. Let us know how it turns out!

My link didn't work- just search "disco dust"
at country kitchen usa or other cake supplier...

This could very possibly be a dumb question, but what's a smash cake?

A smash cake is a little itty bitty cake for the baby to smash to smithereens! It's hysterical to see their eyes light up when you put a whole cake in front of them, typically a 6 inch I think?

I've heard Disco is very cool. I would love to try it but haven't had an opportunity to order it yet.
