You would probably do much better, showing up in person and making your request. It demonstrates your initiative to show up, dressed as if you are ready to go to work.

I don't live in Michigan, but I'm very impressed that you are looking for an intership!! Like JoAnn said, maybe you can got visit some bakeries/cake shops in person -- just put your best foot forward and you will be great! Best of luck to you!!!!!
