Does anyone live in Michigan and what is involved in starting a business in the metro area???????
Hi. I'm over in the Lansing area and just getting ready to start selling cakes and some other baked goods. I'm starting to do research so I'll post links here on this thread when I find them. Maybe you can too. Good luck with your business!
I'm in Northern Michigan - Traverse City area. I know that in order to know what is legal, you have to talk to the County health inspector or Agriculture inspector. Baked goods typically fall under the AG depending on what you're doing. Each county has different requirements. However, I think that this requirement is state-wide-double check with your local person--in order to sell commercially you have to have a licensed kitchen that is used only for the purpose of commercial cooking. You can have it at your home, provided zoning laws allow, but it has to be a completely separate kitchen. Now, I was told by my local guy that there is no need for commercial equipment, just that it is in good working order and fit for the intended purpose-that is something your inspector would approve.
Otherwise, if you're doing an assumed name, you need to have your dba filed with the county clerk. It's not very expensive-$10 for me.
Good luck!

I live in Clarkston 30 mins north of Detroit I am in the very beginning of thinking about getting a cake business started. I do them out of my home for now. I'd like to keep in touch with the rest of you Michiganders.
I'M FROM CLARKSTON MICHIGAN ALSO I WOULD LOVE TO GET TOGETHER WITH OTHERS WHO LIVE IN MICHIGAN. PLEASE PM IF YOUR INTERESTED. THANKS.
Hi Neighbors!
I'm from Michigan too. It doesn't seem I'm close enough to any of you but wonder if you've checked into local cake clubs? I highly recommend it! What about ICES? Michigan has a chapter and you can mingle with people from all around the state.
Hey Traci. I used to live in Traverse City/ Kingsley back in 1991 - 1996 or so. I played on the women's hockey team when they first started up.
I am in Alaska now but just found out we are moving to Sault Sainte Marie MI next year! (We are coast guard.) Yeah! I love MI!
I am also looking to get a legal kitchen then and would love to be part of this thread even though I am not there yet. We will be buying a house with a basement (this is a requirement of mine, LOL) and I want to put the kitchen there. I know it also depends on zoning but won't know that till we actually buy a house! : )
