Find the dead centre of your cake and stick a toothpick or pin in it.

Measure the circumference of your cake and work out how many colours/strips you want to use to make up the circumference. Cut your fondant into strips the correct width and the right length to go from the base of the cake and hit the pin in the top. Glue your strip on - side of cake first and a bit more water in the center of the top part of the strip. Use a ruler and place it on one side of your strip at the edge of the cake and also against the pin. Cut along that line with a very sharp blade, then do the same on the other side. You should now have a perfect triangle on top of your cake which you can finish glueing down. Repeat with other strips. Done! (remove pin when finished...!)

Its a bit of a PITA and time consuming but the effect is very nice.
