Can You Describe The Color "sable"?

I have to make a cake with chocolate brown and sable. Is sable like a celery green? Lighter? darker? Thanks guys!
To me, sable is a dark brown...not blackish...but certainly a dark color. Maybe with golden undertones.
I was under the impression that sable was a brown also. I've had shelties (dogs) that were the "sable and white" variety and they were several shades of or brown and white.
Here is the online Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of the word sable:
1 a : the color black b : black clothing worn in mourning -- usually used in plural
2 a or plural sable (1) : a carnivorous mammal (Martes zibellina) of the weasel family that occurs chiefly in northern Asia (2) : any of various animals related to the sable b : the fur or pelt of a sable
3 : the usually dark brown color of the fur of the sable
When in doubt, I myself usually prefer to go with the definition listed first. Also, having an amateur interest in heraldry, I discovered a long time ago that the word 'sable' has been used to refer to the colour black in blazons, or heraldic descriptions of coats of arms.

Definitly brown, definitly get a swatch. Waaay too many interpretations of that color out there.
Oh, my gosh, then what in the world was she telling me. Her exact words were my colors are chocolate brown and sable, which is a light green. Hmmmm.....I better call...
thanks everyone!
just highlights why the person needs to give you a color swatch if they want something specific.
This is what I thought sable was.
Here is a website with sable in a colour chart! It would also depend on what shade of sable she would like! a colour sample will be esential on this one from the sounds of it!!!

To me chocolate brown and sable would be the SAME COLOR...LOL
Definitely get a color swatch on this one, no two ways around it.
But leave off the peals of laughter until after you hang up the phone with her...
Well, I'll tell you this........ I can't wait to see the final cake, just so we ALL know what color it is!! Whew!
What ever happened to just plain old color names, I mean like " I want a cake done in light and dark brown." Or " I want a cake done in light green with brown accents." ??????
Hmmmmm... Chocolate Brown and Sable - makes me think of the movie Steel Magnolias when the wedding colors were blush and bashful. Sally Field's character, the mother of the bride, said the colors were pink and pink.... Loved that movie! Maybe she meant either sage or celery if "green" came up in the conversation.
ibmoser!!!! I was thinking the exact same thing!!!!!!
"Blush and bashful, I say it's pink and pink. Why the whole sanctuary looks like it's been hosed down with Pepto- Bismal"!!!!!!
One of My very favorite movies!
Maybe these folks should watch it and get a few pointers, Oh wait, then they might ask for an armadillo grooms cake.
Well, we used to raise Collies, and the were called Sable and white.... that "redish brown" color and white..... Go figure !!
pink and pink.... lol.... makes me laugh i have a wedding next month in which the colors are champagne and cream.......not much contrast there!!
Well, I'll tell you this........ I can't wait to see the final cake, just so we ALL know what color it is!!
Me too!!
I actually spoke to her. Apparently it's similar to a celery green but more muted. She's a really easy going person, anyway....so if I'm off a bit, she won't care. Thanks everyone!
celery green would be Sage, not Sable. I hope she ordered the right color dresses! Oooh boy!
