When using royal icing to decorate sugar cookies it is taking more than 24 hours to completely dry. I have heard that it could be the amer color gel that I am using to dye the icing. The colors really pop. Last night I did a bunny which was mainly white, no ameri color, and it dried just fine. Does anyone use something different to dye icing? Is anyone else having this drying problem?
95% of the time I use powder colours because the glycerine in gel colours causes the icing to weaken (and it can take longer to dry, but it's more because of the weakness that I do it)
Where can I get powder colors and are they as effective at coloring as the ameri color gels?
thanks,
I'm in Britain and have never heard of Ameri Color before taking part in this forum, so I can't say. I also use a British brand of colour AFAIK anyway, it's called Sugarflair and it colours icing just as well as their gels do (I pretty much exclusively use Sugarflair gels too, except for one colour I prefer from Wilton when I can get hold of it). I assume there must be a powder food colour in the states though? I buy mine at a local cake craft supply store, maybe try where you buy your supplies from?
