Help, I'm Desperate! Gun Scope Cake That's Lifted Off The Board

A I'm making a gun scope cake, not the gun but the scope on a gun. I inserted a pic here. My problem is not shaping it or carving it, it's finding something to support a cylindar bottom so I can keep it completely round. Next issue is the customer does not want it flat on the board. Since a scope is lifted off of a gun, he wants it lifted off of the board. He doesn't mind dowels underneath the cake lifting it but I don't know how to attach the dowels from the cake board to the bottom of the cake. Hot glue? I don't know. Also, if I am able to keep the scope completely cylindar then how will the dowlels adhere (if I do use hot glue) to something that is rounded when the top of a dowel is flat? I hope someone understands what I'm trying to say here, haha. This is a long time customer and I do not want to disappoint but I'm stuck here and this is stressing me out more than it should. If anyone has any ideas whatsoever I would greatly appreciate it if you could share :)
Maybe instead of gluing dowel to board, you can 'drive' it through the cake board *hammer it into the board (if you are using a standard cardboard [especially if you are using more that one board.]) That will make it easier to transport also. Are you making the scope out of cake?
AMaybe use a T shaped dowel system covered in Rice Krispie squares for the centre cylindrical portion and cake for both ends?
:-)How many servings is the cake?
That's all I have. I've never done a sculpted cake
AWow. That's amazing! I think I'm going to go for that rather than hot glueing. Thanks so much!!! I am making the entire scope out of cake. Going to fit it on a full sheet board but it will be quite narrow, I was thinkng something like 6". Diameter and the end and 2" I the middle. So we'll see how it turns out. Someone else told me I could cut a mailing/poster tube in half so I can use that to put the cake in to keep in all a solid cylindar. I just need to find something small for the middle though
AWhat is a t shaped dowel system? I never heard of that. And the cake Needs to serve 20 so it's going to fit on a full sheet board but being as it needs to be quite narrow I'm hoping that will be enough cake
A You can shape the cake board as the base of the scope and supported in the middle with a plastic PVC or u can get those see through heavy plastic supports .
if you are making only the scope you can drive the dowels through the board on the bottom for extra support into your baseboards. for the underneath side of the scope, if you can, cut a pvc into halves (approx.) (lengthwise) and let rkt or cake sit in the pvc pipe, have pre-drilled holes (a little smaller than the dowel rods going into the board) drilled into the pvc pipe and fit the dowels (tight, snug fit) into the top part of the pvc which will be supporting the scope/cake. find a food safe glue and glue (or use royal icing (?)) where the supporting pvc & dowel come into contact. ice or cover in fondant...voila`. : ) post pics : )
Very ambitious project & nicely done! They must've loved it : ) Thanks for posting detailed pics. They make a nice tutorial.
