i want to do this effect however instead of putting on the frosting with a spatula then smoothing it out can i put the frosting in a piping bag with a round tip all the way up then smooth it out with a scraper??????? its just i cant find anyone whose done it this way on the internet???/
You know that doesn't look like it was put on with a spatula to me, as much as it looks like it was piped on with the super-wide icing tip (whatever it's called).
MBalaska, I think it's a Wilton 789. It's like a basket weave tip but smooth and pipes big flat strips of icing. I'd have to agree it's likely this is what was used and it doesn't look like a spatula because it has a quite defined edge to the top of the icing layer.
AA quick icer tip then smoothed with a bench scraper? Try google searching Liz Larson she uses a quick ICER for everything.
AI am 95% sure that cake was done with one of the basketweaving tips. Same as the icer tip but.smaller. that's how I would do it. But there is a chance they put it on with a spatula or something
AJust because you can't find an internet tutorial doesn't mean it hasn't been done (or can't be done).
The original tutorial used a spatula:

It doesn't matter HOW the BC gets onto the cake as long as it gets on in a fairly even layer, and as long as the colors are kept fairly separate until you are ready to smooth them.
