How can I achieve this color red on my fondant icing using Masterchef gel color?
please help
Jen
Hi! I was told by my cake decorating instructor that I couldn't ever get red fondant on my own, even if i used the whole bottle, that i had to buy it. So I have never made it only bought it.

There are links after the recipe on how to achieve dark colors of fondant, she has two different methods: one involves candy melts (my favorite) and the other with food coloring
A^^thats why I was asking. If you make your own it can be done. I would NOT try and knead white fondant and try to go to red. Before you reach the right color the product will more than likely be useless.
AOk. Well if you could I would make another batch and add the color to the melted marshmallows. That's the easiest way. Otherwise you'd have to just add some red until it gets there. It looks more like a darker red...but I really couldnt tell you what exact colors to mix (if that's what you're asking)
Common sense thinking behind this will make this sound very odd but I was taught this by a professional decorator and it really works:
To get a rich red, start with pink food coloring. Then once you get a deep pink, start adding red.
Youll wind up using a lot less color this way.
I know a lil red added to white is pink (the common sense part) but trust me here, use pink coloring first.
I used this method to make the red fondant for my elmo cake topper and I have used this method for Buttercreme as well. I must say that it works a lot better with BC than with Fondant, only because mixing a lot of any color to fondant can change its consistancy not to mention covering a whole cake is a lot of fondant to mix if you already have it made. Its best to add the color into homemade fondant when the marshmallows are melted, before powdered sugar is added.
I use this method when I only need red BC or a small amount of red fondant, otherwise I just buy red (& black) fondant.
