LOL.  I'm having my Girl Scout troop come over tomorrow.  I'm going to teach them how to make and bake a cake, make icing and then some basic piping.  There are 8 girls and they're all around 10, so I'm not expecting too much, hopefully a lot of fun.

Any tips?  Ideas?  I already baked cupcakes so we'll be able to decorate right away (the old TV cooking show swap!).  I have some templates from my first Wilton class so they can copy those.  I have 10 bags of icing ready to go with assorted tips and I gave them each an 8 inch round cake cardboard to use as their practice board.

They will get to eat at least one cupcake and save one for their awards ceremony the next day.

AGood luck with that.

Man, I'd break out in huge hives with that many little kids around me. I'm allergic.

I think your allergy is contagious, Godot.

Do you have any silicone flower moulds that they could push some fondant in to to make some flowers for on top?

You are a brave Scout to take on a project like this. how about some MnM's, jelly beans, pretzels, colored marshmallows, licorice string, fruit leather (or is that too young for your group?)

AYou could print out their girl scout logo and let them make BC transfers-just print (or trace it backwards) and cover with parchment/wax paper, let them fill it in with icing and freeze while cakes are baking then flip on once the cakes are iced.

They could make badges, sashes, hats (I wasn't a GS so I don't know much about it) whatever to keep with the theme.

You could make parchment cones with colored chocolate or royal icing for cupcake toppers, you wouldn't even need extra tips-just snip small holes.

Sounds like fun! Post some pictures

AI've done stuff like this; it is loads of fun! One tip that is very important is to give them some rules and instructions before you give them the icing. As soon as they have the icing bags in their hands their ears won't work anymore. ;) When I do this I only give the kids one rule; nothing goes in your mouth until you are finished. This means no licking your fingers, squirting icing into your mouth, etc. have fun!

LOL, thanks guys!  Yeah, I'm not usually a fan of groups of kids, but I keep finding myself volunteering for things like GS leader, Coach for Girls on the Run...Mom brain, makes you forget!

Good ideas all, thanks!!

Ah YES.  Nothing in the mouth...good call.  I will make sure to say that one a few times...likely over and over and over!
