Hello!

I need some advice on doing a sculpted cake to feed 100 people.  I have been approached to do a C17 airplane cake to feed 100 people.  I know I can sculpt the cake to look like one but not sure if I can do one big enough to feed 100 people.  Has anyone else ever done a sculpted cake that big?  If so, do you have any suggestions for me?  Structure, base, transportation… etc.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Why not put your plane (whatever size)on top of a sheet cake (double layer) and tint it as sky with some clouds around it,  Here is a version I did a while back ago - not my best cake by a long shot (which is why its not in my gallery!!) but maybe this will help you.  I used cotton candy for clouds - which dissolve on buttercream so put on LAST!!

(I have just tried pasting this picture several times with no success - I hope you can picture it!)

Hi Theresa,

Thank you for replying to my post.  Your picture did not come through.  I thought about a sheet cake too but wasn’t sure if I have the room.  I don’t do them so I wasn’t sure if a full sheet cake will fit in a standard fridge or if the pans will fit in my oven.  I work out of my home and have separate working area but it is your normal size fridge and oven.  Also, how much did you charge?  I typically charge $4.00 per serving but there is no way I can do all that work for just $400.00!  I thought about charging $6.00 per serving…  I know it’s going to be A LOT of work and not sure if I even want to attempt it even if they did pay $600.00…lol… I guess in the long run is it really worth it??

Thank you!

Melissa, I am a hobby baker so I did not charge anything!  I didn't do a full sheet, I made a half sheet size and I did the base in brownies because it was for kids!  I found the plane part to be v time consuming and does require using a dense cake (I used a pound cake).  Mine didn't need refrigeration but if I had to fit a half sheet in my frig by taking out a shelf I probably could have.  You should definitely charge enough to make it worth your time or you will aggravate yourself!  Unfortunately I don't know anything about pricing, sorry! Maybe someone else has a good idea about pricing.

Good luck!

Theresa
