Does anybody do this? I usually use a cake board, but this weekend, I had a board flex on me, almost dropped the cake and it cracked the icing! Luckily, it was before all the final decoration, but it would have really killed me if I was all done! I am thinking of switching to using cake drums for all my cakes for support and presentation. I am trying to think if I have ever seen this before, but can't remember. We used the boards when I worked in the bakery, I think (it has been a few years!).

I do a lot of 9", 1/4 and 1/2 sheet cakes with all buttercream, so it gets pretty heavy! I use Masonite for my tiered cakes (over 2 tiers).

Suggestions or ideas? Am I just overly worried?

Yep, I use a cake drum.  And build the cost into the price.
