AI've been making cakes for years but I've always only worked with buttercream icing or whipped frosting. However I have two cakes coming up that I'm making that I've decided to use fondant on for a cleaner more professional look. I've found a recipe for a MMF that I will b using and I've done a lot of research on using, shaping, etc. But would love any advice y'all could give a beginner. Thanks and happy cake making.
Have a pratice? First time fondant cakes are rarely clean or more professional looking!
There are lots of youtube videos, just watch them. 90% of what I have learnt is from youtube. just go into youtube and type in " how to cover a cake in fondant" and there should be loads
Before making your own fondant you might want to get some store bought (like Wilton's) and play with it. That will give you a good idea of consistency.
I have only made MMF once and thought it was to soft. I tried MFF (Michelle Foster's Fondant) and it is all I use now. So if you may want to try a couple of different recipes to see which works best for you.
AOnce you get the hang of fondant, it really is pretty easy! For decorations, I use a mix of fondant and gumpaste to achieve best texture. I also learned most of what I know from utube videos of fondant and just searching the web like you do:) Anymore questions? Hope I helped good luck!
AThank you all. I plan to do a practice cake a small practice but at least the hubby will b happy its chocolate lol. If I where to purchase the fondant where should I purchase for the best value and what brand (preferred a sweeter less bland tasting)? Also has anyone tried to do a faux fondant? Found this method on pinterest microwaving a can of frosting for a few seconds and pouring it over the cake. My family thinks I can just make anything from my past creations so my 6 yr old niece wants a castle cake for her bday and what did I say sure honey I'll make that for u. And my sister in law is having a baby and making the shower cake you should see some of the things she's suggested lol. Anyhow point is for the towers on the castle I've decided to make them out of rice krispy treats covered in fondant and waffle ice cream cones decorated with buttercream so that their edible. Any other suggestions on that or am I spot on? Thank u all for your responses I found this blog site yesterday and already love all the helpful info I have found.
