Whatever sizes you decide on if it's 3 tiers for only 45 people then one tier should be a dummy.

to me making things as the customer orders if it's possible is one of the fun challenges for a caker

a 39 serving 3-tier is petite and very possible

8x6x4 or 9x7x5--all cake

it could be adorable for a baby shower if everything is done to proportion--

it only looks bad if it's not decorated/done right

i would inform the client that this will be a petite cake

some cakers heavily diss and come off sounding afraid of different size cakes (?) and ice themselves into corners imo--why limit one's horizons--the sun sets soon enough anyhow--

be wild and daring make an unusual sized cake icon_biggrin.gif

suggestion--place small tiers on the turntable and pipe the icing on--

also if you have a stand turntable you can turn it upside down to facilitate the bitsy tiers--use the small end on top--use nubbly shelf paper to keep it from sliding--maybe need to put it on a bigger board temporarily

i mean if you are a hobby baker--no worries

if you have a nice secure minimum price set--go for it

think in miniature--it's refreshing

got lilliputian? ;)

and--you'll get all your servings out of the two bottom tiers of course

so the top tier can be shorter if necessary--they don't all have to be the exact same height

they only need to be proportioned

use the decor (and the size of the decor) to visually balance out anything that needs it

another idea --

for the display-- is to turn a cake pan upside down on the display table or a stack of books and put a pretty cloth over it

and place the cake on that so it shows to best advantage in all it's petiteness

not too tall --but all in proportion
