I have a request for a wedding cake and I am struggling with the colors. The couple's colors are maroon and dark turqoise and every sketch I do looks like a 4th of July cake- red, white and blue. No flowers- art deco design elements. I have never been so stumped on a design plan!
These colours work much better on an ivory background. They can look very jewel-like.
The next thing I would consider is to do most of the piping in ivory with small fill-ins of the colours.
Contact the couple and see if they will go for the "all natural" option of real butter and vanilla to give you that ground shade to work on.
Have you looked at Art Deco window designs? That might help.
There are also tons of Art Deco posts on Pinterest. If you want really dark maroon and turquoise for the cake, the best way to go is airbrushing. I have one, but I shy away from it. One of these days I'm going to get really good at it and go to town, but if you're not already into it, I figure there must be a hefty learning curve. However, I just recently discovered that you can paint with airbrush paint using watercolor brushes. That might do the trick for small fondant accents.

I have plenty of examples for the art deco elements- I just had a hard time making the colors work. :)

You can't tell in the pic but the "wings" and the stripes are dusted with super pearl.
