I'm making a western wedding cake that has four cowboy boots in between layers. I plan on drilling holes in the bottoms of the boots to put the dowels through but I'm worried that four wooden dowels wont be enough to support the top cake layer with cake topper on top of that. Will it be sturdy enough? Anyone have any ideas of the best way to construct this?? Thanks!!!

You need to drill holes to take 1/2" dowels, not the usual cake dowels. Use wood or clear plastic (the twist pillars are very strong) and make sure that all dowels are exactly the same length.

I made my own custom pillars from very long twist pillars--I cut off the ends until I had just the twisted part of the plastic rod. I cut slices of plastic tubing that would fit around the rod and glued those to the underside of pieces of 1/4" thick plexiglas for each separator plate. This was strong enough for the middle tier as well as the top tier/caketop. I used 6 pillars and hexagonal pans and nothing came adrift. The pillars went down through the cake to the next plate.

Use a tool like a miter box to cut the dowels square and the right length.

I agree you with def want to use a big dowel for the support.
