I did a baby girl shower cake for work and then about a year latter (the other week) we had another baby girl shower, we had left over napkins and such from the one a year ago so we just went w/ that theme again I wanted to do something different ( plus this is the only time I get to do cakes - family and work - so that is when I get to try new things) but I needed it to fit the theme.

I am back and forth on which one is "better" as better is subjective and I wondered what other ppl would think.

or

Now remember, I am just a girl who likes to eat cake so I make cake, not any kind of professional and nor do I want to be!

I was able to see it fine without the ads covering (maybe they went away).

I think the second cake has far more "pizzazz" than the first, single tier cake.

Ditto, like the second but do like the flower border on the first. Those rotten ads covering the text are back.

I much prefer the second one icon_smile.gif I think there are two many bright colours on the first one, the two tier cake has much softer colours which I, personally, think work much more nicely together icon_smile.gif I also think the fondant gives it a much more professional looking finish.

I like the second one too. The first might look nicer with different colours though. Good luck!

I like the first one. Here's why:

It is a much more vibrant cake. I like the bold colors. I like the way you used the decorations as inspiration for the cake design. I like the border. I like the butterfly and the movement trail.

In the second cake, you were definitely more restrained and edited a lot. Not a bad thing. If you decorated the first cake in the same way as the second cake, ie move the border to the bottom, move elements from the top to the sides, cleaner frosting technique, I think it would be spectacular. But I still think it is fresh and inviting as is.

It is a lot of fun to see your two interpretations of the same theme. Good work on both!

Thanks ladies, I tend to like the 2nd one a bit better too, but then thought well it is more plain. The small cake has taken a while to grow in me, but I started to appreciate some of the things I tried. I tried something new and kinda screwed up the cake and was not sure how to recover, but I did not want to start all over so I just kept going and came out better than how it was midway!!! lol

I wanted to do like what I have seen for cupcakes (1st red flag) where you make a design w/ BC let it crust and smooth/flatten w/ paper towel. but the flowers and butterflies details were to small and when I smoothed it they got all muddled. I did teh whole top and smoothed the whole things... including the non detail parts (reg flag 2) maybe if I did just the design and only smoothed a lil t would have been ok, so I had to outline stuff - made me think of puffy paint.

I did like how on the flowers I had dimension w/ that "puffy paint" technique. lol

maybe next baby show someone can have a boy!!!!! and I can try something new
