I have a cake order and the customer wants a SMBC covered cake with fondant poppies on the sides of the cake. I am wondering if the flowers would stick to the buttercream or if they might possibly slide down the sides of the cake. Also, is there a way to make poppies out of buttercream instead of fondant? They would still have to be on the sides of the cake so I'm still not sure that they wouldn't slide off. This cake is due on Saturday and I am so concerned about how to do it. I don't want the flowers to slide off.

I would use Gumpaste not fondant. I make my flowers and insert a toothpick in the bottom at an angle. The toothpick on an angle keeps the flower from falling off the side of the cake.

I would suggest putting them on a toothpick or wire and inserting them into the cake.

Depends on the weight of your flowers I guess. I stick fondant to my SMBC cakes all the time and I've never had anything stick then slide off. So basically, If it sticks, it will stay. If it's to heavy to stick, you'll need to support it with something.

I did a cake last summer in smbc and med/large gumpaste blossoms on the side. I had the same fears as you. I piped a tiny amount of smbc on the back fo the flower and stuck it on. I came back several hours later for the ceremony (family wedding) and the flowers hadn't budged at all. As long as they are not huge flowers I wouldn't worry a bit about them moving. Good luck!
