Ok, so I plan to make my friend who is an Amazing Race fanatic a b-day cake in 2 weeks. She is turning 50 and the cake needs to feed 40-50 people. Anyways, I have aspirations of making a globe cake sitting on top of a round base cake. I'm using a 10" pan for the base and an 8" ball pan for my globe.
My question is: what kind of support will I need to pull this off? Can the globe be stacked as any stacked cake or will it need a cake board between it's layers, then support between that board and the one on top of the base layer? Then run a dowel through the centre to anchor the two together? I have visions of the the bottom globe layer being crushed by the top, or the whole globe rolling off, lol!!!
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!!

Hi,
I would do it just as you stated with the cardboard in the middle and a cardboard on the bottom to support the weight thats going to be on the bottom tier. I would aslo put dowels in the bottom tier right underneath the globe for extra support as well. i'm scary like that too so I would try to add support accordingly.

I would suggest making only the top half of the ball out of cake. I would use Styrofoam for the bottom half. And, yes, definitely use a dowel through the center of both cakes.

this is a pic my son sent me of a similar idea. ( with a big "hint mum") it uses dowels but also a frame hidden as pillars.
