I was thinking about buying a cake dummy to practice some new techniques on. But I was wondering if it's fine to use a cake dummy over and over again? If so what do you put on the cake dummy to make the fondant stick? TIA
I have a set of dummies I've used many times. Some are yellowed with age, but they're only for my personal use or for photographs, so it doesn't really matter. I would never use a dummy again that was on a sold cake, as I wouldn't be collecting it back.
I use a thin layer of shortening rubbed over the surface to adhere it. If I remember to peel it off in a few days, it comes off easily. If I forget and leave it on til it's rock hard, I put it in a garbage back, and whack it with a mallet. Cracks right off with no mess.
I massage the dummy with shortening. I find that even after many months, it makes it easier to remove the fondant.
