Making A Cakewrecks Cake Is Fun!

I'm doing a cake for the cakewrecks book tour, and I have to say that it's fun to not have to worry about smoothing it out, levelling it, making it look nice, etc. This is the crappiest looking cake I've ever done, which is exactly what it should be like.
How fun to make a cake like that and not have to worry about it!! I just got the new book and can finally breathe again from laughing so hard!
I told my daughter to look at it in the fridge, and she opened the door and a look of horror came over her. She said "It's so ugly! You did a great job!"
I iced it monkey-iced style, then took a paper towel with a big dot pattern on it and "smoothed" it out so there's a paper towel pattern on chunks of it. Then I put a big bloopy blue border at the base of the tiers. It's wreckalicious.
You have got to love the freedom of making a mess of the cake. I'm sure it is a great stress releiver from all the cakes that take us so much time to try and perfect.!!!!!
I'll put an update on my blog tonight. I have to do a groom's cake today, then deliver, so I don't have time to do it this morning. It was a fun event and Jen and John are really nice. The cake was horrifying. It was right up against a window, and people on the other side would slow down and look at it in a really confused way like they were trying to figure out exactly what the horrible things on it were.
Nice job! (Actually, since it's level, stacked properly, and the icing is actually sticking to the cake, it's still waaay too nice to be a true wreck!) I do love the bloody plastic lamb, though.
Yeah, I would have made it leanier, but I had to serve it to the crowd during the book signing, so I didn't want it to totally collapse! It wasn't level, though, but I guess what I consider "not level" is still okay
I was talking to them after the event and they said that they've gotten pretty good at identifying the fake wrecks that people send in. I guess it gets pretty easy after a while. I know that the wedding wrecks are real...I know someone who sent in the DOA monogram that was on a wedding cake on there. It was at a real wedding that she went to, so I think that unfortunately, they're real. I've also seen other bakers' wedding cakes at receptions that looked like they should be on there, but I didn't have the nerve to pull out a camera and take photos of the evidence.
I'm not worried about fake wrecks -- your cake shows that skill somehow manifests itself even when the designer is trying to be funny... you couldn't REALLY wreck a cake no matter what.
Monkey-iced?? Now I'm all scared--am I monkey-icing? I don't even know that that is!
Monkey icing is FUN!! Just slap some frosting on the cake and spread it around making it look like a monkey did it!

I've been trying to get "Monkey-iced" into the cake lexicon for years. It's totally obvious to me when I see a monkey-iced cake, and that's the perfect explanation of it. I've seen a few monkey-iced wedding cakes from bakeries around here, it's pretty sad.
Okay, I guess I'm not "monkey-icing" then. My way seems to involve a lot more swearing.
love the cake! we're waiting for them to visit Austin next month, but have yet to find a soul brave enough to volunteer to make the official wreck. thanks so much for sharing on your blog! it's making me even more excited!
Why don't you volunteer to do it? It was fun and you can get creative with it. I'm surprised more people aren't volunteering to do it! I thought I'd have to fight for the chance, but they said they were having trouble finding people.
I was actually thinking of doing a "cake wrecks" cake for an upcoming show. Bring a little humor to a very stressful day.

unfortunately I don't have a licensed kitchen, but I'm really considering entering in a wrecked cupcake!
I love the cake!
And sadly, it looks better than my best
I checked, and you're wrong!
