So I'm making this peacock wedding cake where the tail needs to fall down the side of a 4 tier cake. I'm making all the feathers individually out of gumpaste/fondant mix.

And I have the Wilton Towering Tiers cake stand. (http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=6E0FE6D2-1E0B-C910-EA49669D12D34C75&killnav=1)

Its stable, which I like, and requires minimal assembly. I had planned on assembling on site, although it has yet to be actually discussed, I just kind of assumed, so I planned on transporting them on the plates, and that way I'd just have to stack them when I got there.
However there are 2 problems.

1. I don't like how huge the gaps are between layers. It comes with 2 size posts, 4 in and 6 in, so I was thinking maybe if I used the 4 in rather than the 6in, there would be less of a gap. (I'm not sure if the 4 in measurement includes the threading at the top to stack the next layer though. and I need the threading to stick out of the top)
I need to build the peacock tail across all of the tiers (and plates), but in order for it to be a single piece, I would have to transport it stacked? (does that seem like a bad idea to anyone?)

2. Like in the picture, I'm not crazy about the border of the plates being that large. Do you think If I used a little smaller plates than the actual cake size that would be a bad idea? Example, put my 12'' round on the 10'' plate?
or I played with the idea of covering them in fabric or something so they aren't white?
Suggestions?
The bride wants me to use this stand so they can easily take it apart and they don't have to worry about any collapsing etc.
And in case I don't end up being there to assemble, its really simple and there isn't a lot of room to screw it up.

I just measured, the plates have a 1 in difference from the cake size.

I have this cake stand and have used it several times. When I don't want the border of the cake plate to show, I placed a cake cardboard round in the middle of the cake plate (cutting out a hole for the stand to thread through) and used a little frosting to hold it in place, then I covered the entire surface with fondant and cut out a hole like in the cake cardboard. Then I placed the cake on the cake plate. When you use a smaller cake plate than the cake layer you are placing on the tier, the cake will completely cover the cake plate.

Hope that helps!
Pam

Thanks Pam!
Do you like this stand?
And do you think its stable enough to transport assembled?

You're welcome icon_smile.gif I do like the stand and it can be arranged to fit your needs. In my opinion, I wouldn't travel with it assembled, unless it was only 2 tiers. If someone can travel with it and hold onto it, then you could send it assembled.

Can't wait to see photos of the cake icon_smile.gif

Can i suggest that you use SPS for support? It will easily accommodate your design and is made for transporting cakes assembled.

Hi there

I have to transport a cake 6 hours in a couple of weeks and am planning on using this stand. I'm planning on putting the cake on the plates for transport and assemble on site. I've noticed that the plates are a bit tippy without the feet and i honestly don't have feet for every plate to stabilize them. How have you need stabilizing the plates for transport?

This is my first time using this stand for a cake. So far I have only used it for cupcakes. I wish Wilton would make a 6" plate for it.
