What recipe are you using? I use indydebi's buttercream and then a small foam paint roller to smooth it out after it crusts. Works great!!
Sharon's DVD is great! I have it and between her great recipe and her techniques, you can't go wrong. However, if you need something now, use a viva paper towel. Actually, I think Edna has a YouTube video on how she uses the towel to smooth her cakes.
I've used the foam roller before, works great! Another idea my grandma taught me, after the BC crusts a little place plastic wrap over the icing and use a fondant smoother (any type of flat surface item) and rub lightly, it will smooth it out and the plastic wrap lifts right off!
