Hello

I am making a barbie cake for my daughters birthday tomorrow - I have used a pyrex dish for the cake to get the shape for the skirt. But it seems to be taking forever to cook.

I usually only cook using small dishes so have no idea how long it takes to cook a larger (ie deeper) cake - it is a white sponge mix.

I'm still pretty new to cake making but have been enjoying myself but this one has me a bit panicky - need to make the cake and decorate today for her school tomorrow

Sorry if this is a really silly question but so many different answers on the web not sure what one to take

Thanks

Usually when you make a barbie cake you use the Wilton Wondermold tin. It is a metal tin shaped like a bowl but it has a metal pipe running through the centre. That is very important as the metal pipe conducts heat and cooks the centre whilst the sides are cooking too.

If you are using a pyrex bowl you should also use something to cook the middle, your options are a flower nail or a heating core. As you have already started baking, neither of these are an option. The only thing you can do really is to allow it to cook thoroughly and the trim the top edge off (It'll probably be burnt). Another thing which might help is covering the top with tin foil to prevent it from burning too much.

I made it for the first time two weeks ago. I used my stainless mixing bowl to bake the larger part of the cake and a small bundt pan for the top. I thought I would need a LOT of cake but the recipe I used was so great, I only had to double it and it rose like three inches OVER the mixing bowl! I had to bake it a LONG time though and by the time everything was cooked through there was a crust on top. But it still turned out great. Tasted delicious too.
