I have been asked to do a quote for a wedding of 170 people. I know normally people don't get a cake big enough for exactly 170 people. Any suggestions about how many people I should aim towards for the quote?
Thanks!

Aim for the goal.
Here are two combos that would do:
6"/9"/12"/14" = 166-178
6"/10"/12"/14" = 172 -184
I'm sure you could come up with more combos using squares, etc. Just read the Wilton wedding cake guide.

If they ordered 170 servings, you quote and make 170 (+/-) servings.
I think what you are referring to is the guideline to help a bride determine just exactly how many servings she WILL need.
My rule of thumb is "60% of those invited will actually show up." Used that formula for years ... always worked.
So if they REALLY invited 285 people, then they can expect 170-ish to show up.
Won't the cake look funny if the sizes are even?
6"/9"/12"/14" - the space between the 12& 14 isn't 3 like the others
6"/10"/12"/14" = the space between the 6 & 10 isn't the same like the others
I have never done a cake above 3 tiers before.
indydebi - that's what I meant, 60% rule, Thanks!
Is a 14" harder to cover with fondant? I have never done one that big.
I think for this cake I am for sure going to include the price for the SPS system.
AI say it depends on the reception.
Here in Charleston, my recommendation is different for buffet than sit down and different for dry or open bar.
