Need Ideas For Scotland Themed Wedding Cake
Decorating By lexi55033 Updated 9 Mar 2011 , 2:24am by MRSBSB
I have a couple who is currently living in Scotland, but getting married this summer in the US. They would like to incorporate Scotland into the design of their wedding cake somehow, but still want it to be elegant. Any ideas? I'm really stumped on this one. I know very little about Scotland in general.
Thanks,
Angie
How about plaid ribbons around the bottom tiers with a big flower here and there. Ex. red and yellow plaid with red and yellow flowers. Can't really call it, because I don't know what their color scheme is.
Not sure what their colors are...but the Scottish flag is royal blue and white. That might be a nice color scheme....just do a regular traditional cake but then do it in those colors.
Maybe one one tier, if you can pull it off, do some sort of Scottish proverb or love saying in that Irish/scottish font like the font here: http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSZI_zQbh68GPE6Lxx0aeh4BxS7in8G_s5vu_NHJ8em_EXDxaM7QA
I like the idea too of a plaid, like a kilt though....
Some other theme ideas:

Seems like Celtic is very close to Scottish, I have a Celtic themed cake in my photos (actually its on the home page of my website, if you visit there, its a mainly white cake with some celtic knots and pink flowers) and that might be pretty doing it in a Scottish blue and white theme.
Scots are known for their plaids. Here's a great cake that incorporated plaids -- maybe you could adapt it for your own cake: http://cakecentral.com/gallery/55459
There is no doubt all these ideas say 'Scotland', but for something a little different, more classy and less twee you could go with a design based on the artwork of the architect Charles Rennie Macintosh.
I have tried to add attachments of stained glass artwork based on his work but its not working sorry.

Do you have a link to his work?

Has some examples of designs.
I'm not too hot at this computer malarkey ha ha!
His work is quite Art Nouveau.
See if I saw that the last thing I'd be thinking is "Scotland." His work is amazing though!
To anyone who is from Scotland, this would most definitely remind them of home
Rennie Macintosh is Scotlands most famous architect and Glasgow in particular has a considerable amount of buildings designed in his style. His influence is reflected in stained glasswork, jewellery, furniture. If you like this style, i think it would lend itself wonderfully to cake decoration - in fact i've just inspired myself to do something based on his designs ha ha!
I think the Scottish Thislte blooms or Celtic designs would be the way to go, would be very pretty... maybe you could make a mold so it is a raised design or piping work... then maybe go over it with a gold or silver, depending on the color scheme. Cant wait to see pictures!

Exactly! I'm from America and we think kilts and bagpipes (and haggus) when we think Scotland.
Thanks for the replies everyone! There are some great ideas there. I don't have the skills to pull off that bagpipe cake, but it's an awesome cake!

My own wedding cake (done by a friend) was a tartan plaid cake - we gave her a picture of my husband's clan's tartan and she replicated it in icing on the entire cake. I loved it, and my husband matched his cake.
what about an ivory cake with the tartan draping down with a brooch attaching it to each tier
Hey there,
I am from Bonnie Scotland, although I now live in Canada. You should be able to find out from their last name, what their clan is (ie what colour/design of tartan is relevant to their family).
Here is a link: http://www.scotclans.com/whats_my_clan/scottish_clans/s_list.html
you will be able to click on their last name, then all the information for that clan will come up.
Hope this helps
Brenda
