What kind of wire is used on these cakes that I see with the wire sticking out of the cake with a decoration attached to it?

floral wire but I wouldn't stick that directly into the cake. I found some wire today at Michael's in the cake section so it's supposedly specifically for cakes. I'm still debating on whether or not to stick them directly into the cake though.

I have never done it and have looked through some topics on here. The suggestions have been straws or coffee stirrers and then put the wire in that.
