Hi there- I know this subject has been addressed in the past and I did search for it, but couldn't find what I was looking for.
My question is - Can I use WASC recipe for Red Velvet? I'm starting with DH Red Velvet cake mix, can I omit almond flavoring all together and just use butter and vanilla? Should I use buttermilk for the liquid?
I've only made RV once before and it was from scratch. I just can't bring myself to dump all that red food coloring into another cake!
TIA
Thanks JanH for moving this post to the correct forum!
I would definitely omit the almond extract, put vanilla instead. I would use whole eggs instead of egg whites too. I am not sure about the buttermilk, though. Hopefully someone else will chime in on this. I LOVE red velvet so I hope there are more insights on this thread.
I have been meaning to try MacsMom's recipe for my next RV order, but subbing buttermilk for the coffee creamer...
Here is Macsmom Red Velvet, it can be found in this document https://docs.google.com/Doc?id=df4f9hbq_46cs9f28fs.
Red Velvet Cake - MacsMom *If you don't have 100 mouths to feed, lol, just use 1 box white and measure out 1/2 of the chocolate cake mix, and obviously use half of all the other ingredients.
2 boxes white cake mix
1 box dark chocolate cake mix
2 pkg chocolate pudding
2 teaspoons salt
3 c flour
3 c sugar
3 c sour cream
3 cups vanilla coffee creamer
1 cup water
1/3 c oil
9 eggs
2 tablespoons butter flavoring
2 (1oz) jars Wilton red-red
I think I'm going to experiment and try it with the buttermilk in some cupcakes today.
Thanks Madmillie, I Just checked out all the recipes, lots to choose from. I'll defenitely try some of those out.
I make red velvet wasc all the time and I love it! It's so much easier than making red velvet from scratch and is still sooo yummy! Here is my recipe:
1 Box DH Red Velvet Cake Mix
1 C all purpose flour
1 C white sugar
1 C sour cream
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
1-2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/3 C water
Mix well and bake! Sometimes I also add a small package of chocolate instant pudding, but not always. Either way, I get a great cake . HTH

Thank you very much. What is your favorite red velvet cake
I haven't tried one yet. I've been saving the various recipes posted on CC in hopes of trying one soon. Be sure to copy and past the recipe into a word document, the links I had saved had been removed and it was harder to find. If you would like me to post the recipes or links to the other recipes let me know. Maybe I will try to bake one or two for Valentine's Day.
I make my Red Velvet cake using the wasc method all the time, and my customers like it a lot! The only thing I have not tried yet is putting chocolate pudding in it, I will try and see what happens. Even w/o pudding cake is rich and dense, great for stacking too. Happy baking everyone!
BlakesCakes is my favorite recipe: http://cakecentral.com/recipe/red-velvet-redux-easy-durable
thank you so much for the cake man raven recipe. I tried it a day after first asking the question look great and my Dad loved it.
I 2nd BlakesCakes red velvet redux recipe. It's yummy, WASC-style that uses red velvet cake mix so you don't have to add any food coloring.
THIS RECIPE IS THE BEST. FIRST TIME I MADE IT WAS ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND NOW PEOPLE ARE ASKING FOR IT LIKE CRAZY!! SO EASY TOO!!! I BAKED AT 300 DEGREES FOR THE FIRST HALF THEN RAISED THE TEMP TO 325 DEGREES FOR THE REMAINDER. IT CAN ALSO BE DOUBLED VERY EASY. NOT ONLY IS IT SOOO EASY AND FAST BUT VERY MOIST AND DELICIOUS!!!! EVERYONE NEEDS TO TRY THIS ONE FOR SURE!

I just made it tonight. Too tired to type it out tonight. It was great. Will do it tomorrow if u remindme
I'd like to know what that is, too! haha
The only cake I make with a mix is red velvet. If you have access to Dawn red velvet mix, it's super easy and tastes exactly like what red velvet lovers expect. You have to have a scale to weigh the ingredients.
I think they are talking about the red velvet redux recipe on page 1. If not they should be. That recipe is fabulous and it has buttermilk as an ingredient. Some will only eat my red velvet cakes. I haven't had one that compares to it. HTH
I am going to attempt to make this for the first time! You don't add any oil to it???
I am soooooo sorry - I didn't see your response -
Here is the recipe -
1 box of Duncan Hunes Red Velvet Cake mix
1 cup AP flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup sour cream
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
1-2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/3 cup water
Bake for 50 minutes at 300 degrees then raise temp to 325 and bake till done - approx 20-30 minutes
AThis was just okay for me. It turned out kind of tough. I like the flavor of my scratch RV better, but it almost always sinks. I think I may try adding just a little oil the next time to see if that softens it up. :)
