Has anyone ever used a pan like this? I bought it off ebay, but it had no instructions or anything with it. Need to know how much batter it takes, if anyone knows. Also, could I bake 2 cakes with this pan and then separate the two different size layers, then stack them together to get two layers of each size? I think it could be done if I use a pound cake recipe or the durable cake recipe from here.

any advice/suggestions asap would be great!! icon_biggrin.gif Thanks!

Jenn

I believe I read somewhere in one of Wilton's old yearbooks that this takes one box of cake mix.

Hi
I had this pan, used it once and gave it away on freecycle. I wasn't impressed with how the cake cooked-took a long time for the middle to cook. I would lower the oven temp to 325 and if you have magic strips, use them. Not sure if a flower nail would help or not. Good luck-be sure and post a picture. Oh and frosting was a bit of a pain-a lot easier to frost two separate cakes than all in one.

momlovestocook-I have this pan and the 3tiered one too-I certainly didn't like icing the 2tiered-haven't used the 3tiered-they were freebies from someone-and you are right-took quite a while to bake-an intructor told me to bake it (nexttime-yea we shall see about that one) in a pan of water-just about 1/2 inch of water----

all great advice, thanks ladies....letting my butter come to room temp, so then I'll start baking it. Glad I checked back before I started up the mixer & oven! icon_smile.gif

Just thought I'd let ya'll know.....the pan is in the garbage & the little girl is getting a 1/2 sheet cake. Good thing her mom's my friend & she told me not to make one in the first place if I didn't have time...lol. I don't even feel right GIVING this pan away...that's how much i hate it! I tried it two different times tonight...each time I did all the things everyone suggested...I used the flower nail, wet towel strips (don't have magic strip thingys), put it in a pan with 1/2 inch of water, turned the temp down to 325 the 1st time - 300 the 2nd time. It cooked for almost 1 1/2 hrs and when I pressed it it bounced back like a cake that's done should. Well....I let it cool for about 10 minutes in the pan...flipped it onto a cooling rack...it wouldn't come out!!! So I let it sit a few more minutes, then got the pan by the edges and shook gently...then a little harder...finally it plopped out...only to reveal RAW BATTER in the very center....insane!! icon_mad.giftapedshut.gificon_evil.gificon_cry.gif It did this both times. I don't think a cake would EVER get done in that pan.

Oh well...sheet cake's in the oven now and I'll ice and decorate tomorrow.

icon_cry.gif So sorry for your frustration with this pan. I admire you for trying it a second time!

I have the same frustrations with the bowling pin pan set. The bottoms are too deep to bake at the specified time & temp and the necks & tops are too shallow and thin to stay in the oven very long at all. I've decided that I'll only use the pans for molds for chocolate, or templates for other decorations. Oh, well....sometimes things just need to stay conceptual and should never make it to the shelves--you know, like the New Coke recipe debacle of a few years back.

I'm sure the birthday girl will love whatever you make.

Happy Baking!
Rae

Awww Jenn!
You coulda used that pan for SOMETHING!!! Like Jello? Go get that pan out of the trash! LOL
I can't believe you have now baked 3 cakes!!! Sounds like something I would do !!! Glad you are still in the spirits though!!!

Now go get that pan!!! Use it for jello or something that doesn't have to be cooked! icon_wink.gif Your boys could use it to make sandcastles too!!!

Well, I really hate that this happened to you but I am sure all the TLC and time and frustration that has gone into this little girls cake will be well worth it when the little girl sees it---you have done yourself proud...I now know not to even try the 3layer one-Rachael can have a toy or something-I will try a jello mold out of the 2tier one but I won't take my chances on the 3tier-probably be toooo wobbly.

Jenn.. After the week you have experienced, you are such an angel to work so hard to give this little girl a wonderful birthday cake.!!! I am sure she will love her cake even if it is not two tiers. Makes me glad that with all the pans I have bought.. that was not one of them lol

Ok, ok....I dug the pan out of the trash!! lol Then I threw it like a frisbee into the sandbox in the backyard....it flies pretty well!! The boys will definitely have fun with it. I feel better now. I just hope my big-boy helper 5 yr old doesn't bring it back in saying..."Mamma...I found one of your cake pans outside in my sandbox. Here ya go!!" I just might lose it! lol icon_surprised.gif

After this week with all of its tragedy & loss, it feels good to do something like make a bday cake. Just a little bit of normalcy while everything is still so crazy down here. thumbs_up.gif

Just brining a smile on someones face-especially an innocent child always brightens a sad moment-I am sure her parents will be so thankful-You are wonderful to do this and as far as the pan goes-what a laugh you will have if mr helper does bring it in!! He will feel like he has a treasure when you tell him it's his to playwith!!! See..all great deeds do work out!! Pat yourself on the back!!!

No, what you gotta worry about is the kids now thinking oh boy mommy is sharing all her cool pans with us! They make cool designs in the sand! LOL Lock your cabinets! LOL

Glad everything worked out so well! I know that little girl is going to be so so tickled when she see's her special birthday cake!! You are so sweet to go to all that effort.

What will be HILARIOUS is....
If your boys bring that pan to you and say" Mama, this pan doesn't work. The sand sticks and then falls apart!!" LOL ha ha I bet you would just burst out laughing!!!!!!!!!
