Who Wants To Move A 5 Tier Cake? Long Rant
Business By jillmakescakes Updated 10 May 2010 , 4:45pm by 7yyrt
Ok, so now that I've channelled my inner Chandler Bing, here's how my day has gone:
Got to the first of 3 venues for deliveries today. I confirmed early in the week a delivery time of 11am. I was told that the room was being set the night before, so no worries. Guess what... yep, table not set up, stupid party rental company not answering their phone, room is a wreck etc. After 20 minutes of calling, I had to leave to be on for the next delivery (all deliveries today were simply drop-n-runs). Had to take cake back to shop. I left my cell number for them to call to see when I can get in there.
Go to make second delivery, not even 1 mile from venue, THE ROAD IS CLOSED!!!!!!!! No detour signs, in a very pedestrian part of town with horrid roads. So I get to spend 15 minutes driving around trying to find the best alternative route because this venue isn't answering their phones either. Get there, drop off cake, everything is A-OK.
During all of this, my assistant delivers 3rd cake, no probs, YEAH for her.
Her and I meet back at shop to attempt delivery of the big cake- 5 tiers. Get there, the linens are dirty and you can see through them to the spotted dirty table. Ugh. ask party rental guy if they have another linen and he tries to tell me our cake stand did it ugh again. Oh well, I'm done talking to him.
As I'm finishing, venue staff come out freaking out because the cake is so big. normally this venue puts the cake in the corner and cuts it right there. Now he's wondering who is moving it back to the kitchen for cutting, making it sound like we are supposed to do it. He asks "you're coming back, right?" Uh, nope. So I had to give a lesson on how to move a cake from the middle of the dance floor to the kitchen. He's talking about getting a waiver from the bride and groom to ensure that they aren't responsible if the cake gets dropped because they don't normally move cakes, let along a 5 tier cake with 2 layers of carrot cake!!!
So glad to be home. Thanks for letting me rant.
Damn he wanted you to come back again to move the cake? LOL oh yeah that's included in the cost of the cake! Dirty table linens yuck! Well, I'm glad that your cakes delivered
Wow, what a day for you! I had to fight the heat and humid 90 degree weather here. What is wrong with people?? Can't believe someone would think a dirty table/cloth would be acceptable to put someone's wedding cake on. And they don't know how to cut this cake? LOL Ahhh.. breathe! Horrible Saturday deliveries are over!
Sorry for your day, but just an FYI...here is my delivery charges...I chrage a fee if the room is not set up, so you are way nicer than me:
Delivery:
It is your responsibility to ensure that the reception hall is open and available for set up at the designated time. Should the reception site not be available for set-up, and there are other deliveries to be made, we will keep on OUR schedule and return at the end of the delivery route. In this case, your cake will be late, and we may not be held responsible. An additional gas fee of $25 will be billed to you _________ Initials
So you take the cake apart and THEN take it back in the kitchen to cut it....DUH!!!
I've had it happen - two times in a row - that I've got the cake together, and am putting the final touches on it - only to have the MANAGER come and tell me that we need to MOVE the cake (one was a 4 or 5 tier) becuz they don't have the right table cloth on (when I got there, they were cleaning the mirror center pieces on the cake table, and the wedding was an hour & 1/2 from starting!). Each time I'd been there for over an hour putting these things together. The second time, I'd even told the bride BEFORE hand to make sure the place knew to have the table up and ready to go.
I've made it clear to my brides, the cakes aren't meant to move once they are put together. :/
Florimbio - I like your extra charge idea!
You know, it's really too bad that choking the *expletive* out of someone is technically illegal, because there are times when you feel as though someone has truly EARNED it! Not that I condone violence, mind you, but there are times I wish I had Jedi mind powers. There would be some very hurting folks if I did!
(Man, you channeled your inner Chandler Bing, I channeled my inner Star Wars Geek! Hehehe)
I also have a clause in my contract that says..:
Liability/Indemnification:
We will do our best to make the proper arrangements with you and your reception hall to safely deliver and assemble your cake. Once the cake is delivered and assembled, we are NOT responsible for any damages to your cake. You or your party agrees to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Artistic Cake Creations and its representatives from any loss, injury, liability, damage, claim, lien, cost or expense, including reasonable attorneys fees and costs, arising from execution of this contract, except in the case of sole negligence or intentional misconduct on the part of Artistic Cake Creations or its representatives. _________ Initials
Your hall moves it...your problem...
I hope you took pictures after you were done! Chances are, SOMETHING'S going to happen and you want to prove it wasn't you.
I always hated those venues who put the cake in the middle of the dance floor anyway. To many people walking around, too much risk for accidents to happen. And hey, ya big goomba's! It's a wedding cake! A big, tall, delicately engineered wedding cake! It's not a box of chicken you can pick up and toss to your buddy when you want to move it!
Jill, next time I see you, you gotta tell me which places these are! Enquiring minds want to know!
I done a topsy turvey wedding cake for some one and after I delivered and set it up the people that worked at the venue said I had it turned wrong tried to turn it and dropped it..I had my pics and the bride had signed saying she loved it so it was on them
lol yeah., good luck collecting that gas charge.
I agree.
I think it should read 'additional gas charge of $25 IN CASH will be expected on delivery, or delivery will not take place.'
