Do you use Crisco or store brand shortening for your buttercream?? I always use Crisco, but I'm wondering if I can switch to store brand...sure would save some $$!!
All shortening is 100% fat. (Although some brands might not be 100% vegetable fat.
Crisco is now trans fat free, while some other brands are not (at least, not yet).
When Crisco went trans fat free, some members never even noticed while others had performance issues with their recipes.
If your current recipe/s work with Crisco, they'll work with shortenings that contain trans fat.
Here are some popular CC recipes that work with the new Crisco:

I use Walmart brand because it still has trans fat in it. Its works better than the crisco too!
I must admit- I used new crisco a few weekends ago to make a batch of "whimiscal bakehouse buttercream" and it turned out really loose- I made a second batch with walmart brand and it was perfect. I also noticed that my crisco sort of separated in the crisco container as well- maybe the "no trans fat" issue.
I only use walmart brand.. tried another generic and I didnt like the taste at all... so back to Walmart I go
I bought 2 cans of Walmart shortening a few weeks back and it had a "off" smell and taste to it. The icing had a waxy feel to it. I had used it in the past with no problems. I like the store brand that Sav-A-Lot sells. I had lots of issues with the new Crisco.

I use the shortening from Gordans Food services. I have great results and its half the cost of crisco. I too have used Sav-A-Lot and I find that to work just as well. But the GFS is about $1.50 cheaper and works just as well.
Interesting. Seems like Walmart is a popular choice. I think I'm going out today to get some!!! Thanks!
I have huge performance issues with the Crisco now that its trans fat free. I use my grocery store generic brand that still has trans fat and it works way better for me! Way cheaper too!
I also use the wal-mart brand and it works just fine. I did watch edna's video on making butter cream and I think she said that as long as you use milk as liq. with the crisco it should be o.k.
The main issue that I had was a grainy texture to my buttercream. Use only store brand with transfat and I have silky smooth beautiful buttercream every time.
Oh and for some reason, it tasted sweeter, I don't know how but it did.
I am so glad you asked this question. It's something I wonder every time I'm buying Crisco, but have been too afraid to take the risk on a cheaper brand. Next time I'll be trying the Walmart brand. Plus, I learned alot of things I hadn't realized before and probably wouldn't have known to ask about. So thank you everyone.
Not that you need another person saying so, but, I always use the WalMart brand veg. shortening. Always.
The walmart brand is "Great Value" in a blue and white container. You will see the difference immediately.
Oh wow. I have just the exact reaction to Wal-Mart brand. when I use it my icing becomes to soft and won't crust properly, I don't like the feel it gives the icing etc. i suppose it is just personal preference.
