What Would You Charge For This Cake?
Decorating By ExcitedNewbie Updated 11 Sep 2009 , 2:42pm by online_annie
Being new to cake decorating, I have never charged anyone for a cake before. I was hoping that some of you would be willing to give me an approximation of what you would charge to make a cake like this for someone. I originally made it with a 9" and a 6" cake. Both were about 5.5" tall. The towers and all of the embellishments were made out of MFF. The grass was made out of RI. The water was made out of piping gel.
ANY help you can be on this would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you!!!!

Sorry, I don't know but I'm posting the link to your cake.

I't just easier for people to see straight away what you're talking about, rather than go find it and then make their way back here.
Hope this helps you get an answer.
Beautiful cake by the way.
Wow that is a beautiful cake! I would charge at LEAST $200.00
Did you role out the stone print on a textured mat or did you print them individually? Are the towers filled or hallow fondant?
Wonderful cake. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks OregonCakeLady and BabyC1985!
The stones were carved individually and the towers are hollow. I appreciate the advice SO much!!!!! :0)
I just put all the assumed info for this cake into my cake boss. The cost (my cost) would be $44.52 and the price total with 15 hrs labor at $12.00/hr, you need to charge about $225.00. You will make $180.00.
That still doesn't seem like enough to me though. Hope you sold it for enough!
Gorgeous cake! And you say you're a newbie?? Would you mind sharing how you made the towers exactly and the steps? I know you mentioned the towers were hollow. Is the MMF wrapped around something? Just Beautiful!!
Thank you cncsmom45 and OregonCakeLady!!!! You don't know how much this helps me!!
I made this cake for my daughter. I've been approached by someone to make another one for purchase. Thanks to OregonCakeLady, I have a clue as to how much it is worth. I really appreciate the help!! :0)
The towers were made by wrapping fondant around paper towel tubes. The largest tower was made the same way, but I used a plastic spaghetti holder instead. Immediately after sealing the edges and before they dried, I used a rectangle cookie cutter that my husband made out of scrap metal, and made impressions in rows all around the tower.
Being new to this, nothing was complicated, but it was time consuming.
Thank you for the support!!

Beautiful cake!! Where I live this cake would easily run $350.00 and people would pay you for it. You did an excellent job on your first cake.
THANK YOU so much for the kind words and help! klat7292, it took me 5 days from start to finish. It was a learn and figure it out as you go experience. My mistake was that I made the cake first, then added the embellishments. The cake was stale by the time it was all finished. lol
For basic fondant work like what you do I would charge $225. Just looking at it, that cake should be $500. If you feel like you are skimping on cake, set it on a sheetcake. However, that is easily as good as anything I've seen go for double that.
For a cake like that you are charging for the artistry, not the cake itself. Most people can't do that which is why it costs so much. Charm City would be proud to have that cake leave their building and they start at $1000.
At LEAST $250 - that's a wild stab in the dark. That cake is amazing!!
Can't wait to see what you're capable of once you're no longer a "newbie"
I just LOVE your avatar!! Sooo cute!! Is that something that you created too?! You are so talented!!
klat7292, thank you for the nice compliment on my avator! It is a close-up of two of the fondant monkeys that were on my Jungle cake. :0)
Fantastic Cake!!! Do NOT Undercharge yourself on this. Others will ask and you need to set the bar for your work. Stunning work! Thanks for sharing!
