My husband is being deployed next year so I am already planning his welcome home cake. I was thinking of doing an airplane cake of an A-10. I have only completed 2 fondant cakes at this time, but plan to do more. Am I crazy for wanting to do this cake? How should I do it? Do you think I should do a tiered easier cake? I will also be driving 700 miles with it! Thanks for all your help.
Hi, don't know an A10 looks like, but you can use cake for the body and the wings of the plane. I would bake a rectangular/sheet cake and then carve the body first. Then the wings. First cover the body with fondant and then the wings. Once you have done that, attach the wings to the body with some bc or royal icing. If there's anymore wings at the back, make them with gumpaste, few days ahead and they have to be completely dry. You can just insert them into the cake.
HTH.
