Thank you Loucinda.
I found were I can order the first book and all the sheets in a webshop in the Netherlands. I'm happy!
Is it necessary/better to have the first book before you go to the second book?
The second book has more "advanced" flowers in it. I would start with the first book for the basics. (the second one has all the recipes and such too though)
I am a really dummie when it comes to different words like 2 1/2 PARTS. What is PARTS????
Please help I want to make these but cannot seem to get the correct PARTS size! lol
If you are making something...say you are using a 1 cup measure....1 part would be one cup, 2 1/2 parts would be 2 and 1/2 cups.
If you are using litre as your measurement, one litre would be one part. 2 1/2 parts would be 2 and 1/2 litres.
Hope that helps!
thank you for clearing that up for me. I have lost my brain. I am working on my gelatin now and I am hoping it will turn out better than my first try. lol
Hi, I made my first attempts at flowers/bows. Please be brutally honest with me with your opinions, as I am considering putting them on a cake for tomorrow.
I'm in the UK and didn't have any access to veiners/templates so had to improvise with acetate. I also didn't have any rainbow/pixie/sparkle dust so had to add colour with lustre dust.
Okay you used acetate and it worked well. Great I will try using that soon. lol
I have done some with single veiners and some small impression mats. I will post mine soon. I have a club meeting on Thursday night and we are learning how to make them. After we put the ones I made together I will take photos and post.
yours look great.
With the acetate I painted an A4 sheet, the first time not so good, it shrivelled up and curled a lot... but the second time I put the acetate on top of a sheet of A3 paper, painted the whole sheet and went over the outline so the gelatin stuck to the paper and acetate. That way the gelatin couldn't shrivel up and I was left with a total smooth sheet of A4 gelatin which I cut up for the bow.
HTH with your experiment
They're gorgeous!! If you don't have Disco Dust to do the edges with but you want to snazz them up a bit, you can trim them with funky scrapbooking scissors to give them a snazzy edge. Just a thought! You did good!!
Hi, I also made my first flower! I think it's quite nice
I do have problems with spreading the gelatin over the sheet. Some parts are really thin and some parts are thick. There is also variation in the intensity of the color then.
Does anyone have some tips on spreading the gelatin nicely?

Your flower is gorgeous!! As for the spreading of gelatin, use a flat brush and paint it on in long strokes evenly. That should help.
Another tip that helps make the gelatin even out is to put the sheets on a heating pad. That way it all stays liquid and warm until you take the impression mat off the heating pad.
I tried to make my first gelatin bow yesterday. I managed to get the right thickness but when it dried and released itself from the plastic, it dried rippled and wavy. Has this happened to anyone else...where did I go wrong and does anyone know how to prevent this? Thank you.
That's a great idea, now I have to figure out how it's called in dutch
First I'm going to buy a new soft brush.
I made a second flower and I finished my bow
Just an FYI because I could not get my pictures posted. I put them on Jens Cakes on Facebook. Come check them out. I love them.
Phew! Finally got through all 50 pages of this thread! I can't wait to try this technique, too bad I don't have any upcoming cakes right now! Since they keep so well, perhaps I'll have a go anyway and stow away the "keepers" for a later date.
I haven't been this excited over a new technique in awhile-- hopefully my results will be as impressive as the ones I've seen here!
I have yet to use this technique on a cake but they do keep very well. They look very pretty too.
I have been looking around for something to use to make flames for my bonfire that i am making to put on a cake.
i came across everyones post about making gelatin bows etc.
I have on package of gelatin and i am going to try and make my flames tomorrow.
If anyone has done this or has any tips .
That wouuld be great.
this will be my first time using this idea.
if it works i will get brave and make bows and butterflies
Metweety6: Of course you can make flames. Just cut sheets into a petal type shape and arrange on your cake. I would use different colors of red/orange/yellow. You can even make your sheets using these colors so that each flame will be varigated instead of separate color sheets.
The only problem will be if you are trying to stand up the flames on top of the cake. Although they are stiff I might be tempted to place them into some royal icing to secure their bases but not sure if it will melt the gelatin or not. Good luck!
Absolutely you could make flames! Make them a little on the thick side (as pp said) and they will stand up just fine. I also would make them several different shades of red, orange and yellow to make them more realistic.
Please post a pic of them when you are done!
sweet thanks ohh don't worry i will post.. just hope the weather doesn"t get too hot or nothing will work.
its a bummer not having AC..
but because i am a sucker for making cakes for the family ..i will do it..
wish me luck
Oh, Yes, I remember the days of no AC. Thank God we were able to buy a newer house this year and it has Central AC. LOVE IT. I cannot wait to see your flames such a great idea.
So I have a question, and I am pretty sure it has not been asked yet!
I have seen many warnings that getting the gelatin sheets wet will cause them to melt...does that mean that you can reuse sheets of gelatin by melting them down again? I am thinking in particular of those of us just starting, with the too thick/too thin issues and all. I would hate to waste it!
Does anyone know if it is possible to melt down the already dried sheets of gelatin for a do-over?
No, it didn't work for me anyways! I thought the same thing when first making it.....nope, you can't reuse it.
Once the gelatin has dried, it is pretty tough to ruin it....even regular humidity doesn't bother it (refrigeraion humidity DOES) About the only think that will mess it up is getting wet.
boy i am such a dumb butt. i don't think my flames are going to work. I found another recipe .so i wouldn't use so much gelatin incase it doesn't work.
so i used 1 tbs gelatin and 1/4 cup water.. I followed this persons step by step .( if found this recipe by googling) and so far i don't know.. I poured some in my leaf shape plastic mold. they look like they are drying.
well we shall see. thank god this cake is not due till saturday
to bad there is no video to this idea. now that is something i could watch and learn by..
well keep your fingers crossed...
