Les Voilas ! These are the fudgy pudgys and the oatmeal cream pies which are the biggest sellers. I have Evelyn holding one of them in her open hand so you get an idea of the size.

I just found this thread and looked at your oatmeal cream pies! OMG.. they look delicious! They were my favorite lunch snack long ago in elementary school I'm going to have to make those!
I tried a recipe from my Amish cookbook and the oatmeal ones came out basically like big cookies. Does anyone have a recipe that makes nice fluffy oatmeal whoppie pies (or is this the way the oatmeal ones are supposed to be, fairly flat).

Oh, these sound like heaven! If anyone knows of a link to a tried-and-true recipe, I think many of us would appreciate it! (I know my DH and kids would! )

Oatmeal cream pies aren't supposed to be cakey, but if you take your favorite oatmeal cookie recipe, switch the baking soda to baking powder, change 1/2 or more of the brown sugar to white sugar, and chill the scooped cookies fro at least two hours before putting them in the oven, you will have a puffier, " cakey" cookie.
OK, I have devoted 2 days to these things and I finally think I have a decent recipe to make these from a box.
Box cake mix (I used chocolate)
3 eggs
1 and 1/2 cups water
1 package instant pudding (I used chocolate)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Mix it all together. Put the pudding in last or it will get very thick. I have been baking at 350 for about 9 minutes. Let them rest for about 3 minutes when you first get them out of the oven then move them to a cooling rack.
For the icing I have been doing a stick of butter, 1/2 cup shortening, about 3 cups powdered sugar, 1 cup peanut butter and a bit of vanilla and milk to thin it out until the consistency is right.
OMG. These things are sooooooooo bad. I just sent 20 of them to work with my hubby and the guys loved them. Thanks for the idea you guys. I never would have thought to make these. Pumpkin is next! lol
Just another thought. I remember reading another thread about mixing Jello in with cake mixes. That could probably apply here but I haven't tried that yet. Hmmmm. Cherry, Orange, Lime, the sky seems to be the limit with these.

I'm going to try these sometime next week after I catch up on all my damn MBA homework
I'm sure after tweaking they will be delicious
ETA: I just looked at the recipe some more.. it looks like they will be nice and chewy. Yum!
Snarky, my mouth actually watered when I saw your whoopie pies! OMG! They look AWESOME! And they are a really good size too. Are you in the New England area? You make whoopies like a Mainer! (That's a big compliment, hee hee.) Huge thanks also for that tip on the oatmeal whoopies. I've got to give it a shot.
TracyLH, there are a number of recipes posted throughout this thread as well as many links to different recipes. Try the Maine Queen of whoopie pies recipe, Amy Bouchard, here: http://www.recipezaar.com/Wicked-Whoopie-Pies-162298 And here's a link to the queen herself: http://www.wickedwhoopies.com/info.php?ssidx=MzI2MS43Ng== And no, I don't get anything for posting this, haha! I don't know her. I just love her whoopies! Enjoy!
Jimandmollie, a box mix recipe for whoopies sounds VERY attractive to me! I've got to try that too. Anything that makes my life easier is welcome! Geez, I'm gonna get sooooooooooooo fat. But what a way to go, huh??!

Amen Sister! lol These things killed my diet!
Yum thanks Snarky for posting those!
Ok now I am thinking oatmeal whoopies with peanut butter filling like the Do Si Dos.
I made a carrot cake the other day for dinner and the entire time I was thinking about carrot cake whoopies. I am not sure how to tweak my recipe though, because it already bakes up so dense I would be afraid to add more flour to thicken the batter.
Ooooohhhhhh, carrot cake whoopies. Maryjsgirl, you are NAUGHTY.
What the heck is a do si do? Forgive me, I'm a Yankee and I just don't know, but I have a feeling it's going to make me fatter.
A Do Si Do is the oatmeal and peanut butter sandwich cookie from Girl Scouts. They may call them something different now, but I always call them by their old school names like the Samoas, lol.
Thanks, Mellee and to everyone for all of the helpful tips and ideas. After seeing the pictures of Snarkybaker's, I am definitely inspired to make some!
You sound really broken-hearted about that, Redlotusninjagrl.
Ah.....Maryj, thanks for clearing up that mystery. Girl Scout cookies are too expensive for me these days. I could make a whole batch of whoopie pies for the price of one box!
First off, Happy Mother's Day to all!!!
Now, onto Whoopie Pies -- I was in Shipshewanna, IN yesterday. It's very much an Amish/Mennonite area. I got a box of 4 pumpkin spice whoopies and a box of 4 chocolate ones for $3.50 per box at a bakesale. They were really, really good!!
Also, my DH ordered me an amish-built pie safe. I swear, I've wanted one for about 25 years. I'm so excited!!! It should be here in 5-6 wks.
Wow! $3.50 a BOX! Now that's a deal!! I've been to Shipshewana myself, it's a wonderful town. I'll have to look for the whoopie pies next time I'm there. Enjoy your pie safe!
Happy Mothers Day!! I also love Shipshewanna!
Been going for yrs, what a deal on the whoopie pies!
Enjoy!
I tried a banana whoopie pie recipe a few months ago, found it in Martha Stewart magazine!! It was a huge hit, I thought they were rather easy to make!!
I am digging the idea of a brownie-like whoopie pie with a less sweet filling. That's what gets me everytime... the filling. Bleck!! I hate the sicky sweetness of it. I may just have to come down to NC and buy one (or 10) of them.
Cosmo magazine is trolling CC for ideas...
In the "Hot New Trends" section this month..."Whoopie Pies are the new cupcake!" LOL, just had to share!!

It doesn't surprise me to read this. It is not the first time a CC member found a magazine article titled after a thread that was posted here. I can recall this happening way back in the early days of CC, but I don't remember the specific thread that was being followed.

Yeah I can't wait to go to Shipshewana this year! Were the whoopies at the flea market or in town? I would like to check them out for a little comparison.

They were at some "mall" that had shops downstairs and a food court (including the best homemade pretzels ever upstairs. There was just one Mennonite woman and her 2 little girls having a big bakesale right in the front lobby.
Can you tell that I love to eat? I've already fessed up to buying the 2 kinds of Whoopies and a soft pretzel, but we also got a custard pie to take home. Then, we ate at the Blue Gate Restaurant -- all of that great Amish food like fried chicken, homemade noodles, other stuff, then Indiana Sugar Cream Pie for dessert. No wonder I'm struggling to get into my summer clothes!!
I just made three HUGE batches of my vegan whoopie pies:
Dreamsicle, oatmeal & black chocolate... (4 hours later...)
I usually make mini whoopies because they sell extremely fast (at a store)... something about how "cute" they are. The same person who always buys 6 mini whoopie pies, says a large one is TOO big. Am I missing something? Why not just cut the large one and save the plastic?
About Girl Scout Cookies: I make vegan GS cookies, but call them something else (copyright). I've made banana whoopie pies, and they are really good.
You just cant go wrong with a whoopie pie, of any size!
playingwithsugar, love the avatar!
Thanks, Fiddle. Grab it while you can, I'm going to be changing it again soon!

I'd like to try the Dreamsicle whoopie...that sounds sooooo good *drool*! I'm from California, and I've never heard of these, until now. How much would you charge for one?
