Anybody Else Do No Wedding Cakes?
Business By jewelykaye Updated 21 Mar 2009 , 9:50am by MustloveDogs
After having my daughter at the beginning of last year I realized that doing wedding cakes was a little too much. So now that I'm thinking of going back into business I was considering only doing celebration cakes and no deliveries.
My daughter is a year old and I just don't know how I would carry a cake and her at the same time...lol.
Have any of you chosen not to deliver or not to do wedding cakes and how do you think it affects your business?
I wouldn't touch a wedding order with a 10 foot pole... No WAY am I gonna take on 20+ years of dreams of perfection LMAO
I have done 3 wedding cakes but I dont like them. Way too much stress for me. This is supposed to be fun!
Big No for me....I know I am not good enough yet. Even if I was better I know I would stress over it.
I don't think I will touch wedding cakes until I have a couple under my belt that I would/will do for family members. I would like my "lessons learned" to be with family members who got their cake for free or cost only!
I haven't taken on any wedding cakes yet, but I have 1 scheduled for October. My daughter is 3-y-o and I am 2 months pregnant with 'bombino' #2 and I'm thinking YIKES.... my business is just forming and growing and my family - all at the same time!!!
Here's a hint that I use for my daughter with deliveries on celebration cakes. I started this when she was about 2-y-o (old enough to walk besides me and kinda stay there!!!). I covered a show box with scrap book paper, which she picked out and added letters: "Audrey's cake box". Everytime I work on a cake and she is in the kitchen with me, I'll give her a scrap of fondant to play with, shape, use cutters, etc. She will let dry and then add to her cake box. So... when mommy is delivering her cake, she brings along her cake box to show off her creations as well. That way she feels like a little baker as well!!! Obviously this works great for celebration cakes -- delivery and set up of wedding cakes would call for a sitter (if daddy is at work!!).
Take care,
Jaime
Ladybug76 I like that idea! I have an almost 3 year old that ends up covered in powdered sugar (not to mention the entire kitchen) every time I make a cake and she is with me LOL. I'm sure she would love to show off her own creations as well. Thanks for the great tip!

That is the cutest thing I've heard in a long time. I love this idea.

Love this idea! Not that she is old enough for it yet but that will be perfect.
My little girl's name is Audrey too!
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one. I just don't want to sound weird to customers when I state that I don't do wedding cakes. I don't want them to think that I can't do them, it's just the restrictions I'm making while the little one is still...well...little.

i love this idea however my 3 yo would gobble everything up and not make it into the box, lol. probably wind up with a tummy ache--not so good.

Lol....that's funny!
I don't do wedding cakes either. I have turned down 5 people asking me to make their wedding cakes... I'm just getting started and I don't think I'm ready for that yet. I actually haven't even done a real tiered cake yet. I really want to but I'm so scared..lol
I only do wedding cakes for friends as gifts. I have done 2 that I charged for. But when my kids were little it was hard. My son ate about 60 roses in 2.5 seconds when he was 2. And a month later, the wedding cake I did left handed due to breaking my wrist, he ate half of the base tier. Gotta love em!
I don't do weddings either. To me, it's the most important cake in a person's life and that's just too much pressure for me. My skills are geared more towards the obscure cakes more than the beautiful ones.
I tell people it's like asking that little old lady who hems your pants to make your wedding dress. lol!
Besides, I have yet to see a Judge Judy episode where someone sued a baker because Elmo didn't look right. You DO see wedding cake episodes tho'. No thanks!!

I am definitely not doing wedding cakes until I have more experience either. I also have 2 young children (3 and 18mos), so delivery is almost impossible. I just did my first stacked cake. I was incredibly nervous. Here is a pic. I just used straws as the support. (Thanks to everyone for advice.)
I did one wedding cake years ago for a friend. It was small and simple for a family wedding. I worked myself into a tizzy fretting over it.
Since I started decorating cakes again, I'm in it for a fun, creative release. There is just way too much stress trying to live up to someone's ideal of the perfect cake for her perfect day. I'm too old for that stuff!
Well, I'll tell ya my story, lol.
I'm just beginning as well and I have someone who asked me to their daughter's cake for her. I said NO. She said she doesn't expect much, she loved the anniversary cake I did and that's all she wants. Well, I'm sorry to say but that won't feed 100 people that she has invited, lol. Not to mention she would probably keep the top tier for their anniversary. So it will have to be a 4 tier wedding cake. She said she would talk to me later about it... after I told her no that I don't do wedding cakes.
Well, the more I got looking at wedding cakes on here, the more I want to try one. BUT, I am not delivering, I only do stacked cakes (so the delivery/set up should not be a problem anyways) and they better not expect perfection! I will only take on brides with low expectations, lol.

Well good luck with that. I'm still shaking in my boots thinking about tiered cakes..
You know what? I'm going to the store to buy cake supplies, I think I'm going to make a tiered cake. OMG! Did I really just say that... YIKES!!! Well I guess I have been waiting long enough to try one..
i have only done two wedding cakes and they were for family. thankfully they didn't want a stacked cake, i used the 3 level cake stand so that made it easier for set up.
i love making celebration cakes especially cakes for kids they are not hard to please!
I've been doing cakes for a long time now & do wedding cakes BUT, I've finally wised up & decided - it AIN'T worth it!! First of all, brides come to home bakers, wanting a huge, fancy, designer cake for a cheap price! AND most of the pictures they bring in, are dummy cakes, all smooth and perfect. They have NO idea how much time & planning it takes to make a wedding cake. Don't do it fellow bakers - keep your sanity! I love this site & you all do a great job.
I refuse to do any wedding cakes. I have been asked quite a few times and my simple sentence always works really well.
When they ask do I make wedding cakes too?
I say "Oh, no Brides scare me!" and the person always laughs and rolls their eyes in agreement! lol! (admittedly I seem to always be asked this question by friends or family of the bride, never the bride fortunately or I'd have to find a new one-liner!lol)
If I need to explain further, I say that nothing beats the joy of a child seeing their cake and that is the reason I do what I do!
