I just had a question on what you would do.
My parents were watching a local TV show with an interview of a bakery about 20 minutes from me. They were showing their cakes and the owner stated that they were the only place on long island that did chocolate pieces using chocolate reliefs. I do not own a bakery but I do make cakes for people & have my own website. I have been doing this for about three years now & plan on starting a business as soon as I can afford to. They have even copied the pictures out of the Whimsical Bakehouse book (Kaye & Liv Hansen) & used them to sell items. You can see examples of my cakes under my photos (they wouldn't copy to here) Is there anything I can do about this & show that they can't be the only one doing this kind of work so I don't look like a copycat.
are you set up to legally sell your edibles? if not then i dont think you can say anything. Cakes books are an inspiration and many of us do copy the designs in them or do our own versions, you'll never stop that. They have a place of business and can advertise how they choose. Once you get your business up and running then you too can advertise what you do.
There is nothing really you can do since you are not a licensed bakery or business. I am sure there are many people on long island who also do the chocolate reliefs (like you), but they are the only ones who are licensed and able to sell their items right now. Good luck!
Ditto along the lines of what KeltoKel said.
Also, they may believe they are the only licensed bakery to make them. Since you are not yet a licensed bakery, there's not much you can say.
And when the day comes that you have your own business, it would just be a simple "with over 20 years experience doing chocolate reliefs" line type of thing.

Don't worry about what another baker is doing...that will drive you crazy. The best thing to do is to keep your head down and work hard to hone your craft. Utilizing others for ideas is a good way to "fill the well".
"Life is pretty simple: You do some stuff. Most fails. Some works. You do more of what works. If it works big, others quickly copy it. Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else. Tom Peters
Maybe I am just not thinking clearly but what the heck is a chocolate relief?
For me a chocolate relief is when I'm PMS'ing and I bite into that piece of dark chocolate..................hmmmmmm Heaven!!

So true...
Chocolate relief? would that be the same as a chocolate transfer? I wouldn't be concerned about that...
I can't become a legal baker in my home, that I know of. The town won't let me have two kitchens. We are trying to figure out what to do. Thank you for your advice.
