hi,
im curious whats the difference between fondant and satin ice (besides the $price$).
is the taste different, or texture? does one work better for covering cakes?
what about uses for molding figures, bows, banners etc.
any input is much appreciated!

Satin Ice is just a brand of fondant, but it is a very good brand. the only one I use. It has a very nice vanilla flavor. I only use mmf if it is a small cake. Wilton fondant, is tasteless and gross. It just depends on the brand. In my opinion most people have and easier time with mmf and Satin Ice. For decorations, and fondant will work, if you need it to be dry decorations, mix it with gumpaste, or just make is days ahead so it will be dry in time for your decorating. Hope I have helped. Have fun!
Satin Ice is fondant. It is more expensive, but very well worth it. The taste is better as well as the general use. Easier to work with when covering a cake, making fondant decorations, etc. Blows Wilton fondant away.
I like the taste of MMF but I found it very inconsistent between batches so I started getting Satin Ice. It is always consistent, it tastes good and I don't have to make it.
wow! thanks for the quick replies!!!
im thinking of trying the satin ice. i notice that global sugar art has it on sale. the same thing has happened with the mmf, different texture each time i used it.
i do notice how expensive the satin ice is!!!! ugh! i hope its worth the extra $$$$$$$$.

Diddo
It's worth it! You can also buy it at Jester's (google Jester's cake supply) and use the code "cakecentral" for an extra 10% off.
i was just checking global sugar art- and noticed that there are different colors for vanilla. (blue red purple yellow etc)
does that mean you cannot color the plain white vanilla???
or does it not take the color good?
ill have to see if jesters is cheaper than global.
thanks again!
Satin Ice will take color just fine, they offer pre-colored for convenience. I buy the pre-colored red because red is such a difficult color to achieve.
WAIT!!!
dont got yet! (LOL)
what the heck is fondarific??? i found it on jester's website!
help me..........im in a sea on confusion with this fondant stuff!
all i do know is wilton's is the worse!
Fondarific is just another brand, as is pettinice and fondx. I believe it's claim to fame is that it has a buttercream flavor. It's gotten mixed reviews from CC users. However you can't go wrong with the sample pack (you can order that from their website (fondarific.com).
Jennifer Dontz's white chocolate fondant is amazing too. You can get her DVD on-line. Very yummy and easy to work with.
mmmmmmm, white chocolate fondant. now you're talking!
i guess i have alot of research to do.
the fondaric (?spelling) also has a whole list of interesting flavors.
thanks again for all the input!
There's a recipe for cream cheese fondant in the recipes section. I have yet to try it, but it sounds delicious. So if you're up to making your own, you could try that too.
