This weekend I tried airbrushing on a cake for the first time. I used a very simple buttercream that I let get hard in the fridge (had butter in it). I used KopyKake's airbrush food coloring. The problem I had was that the food coloring was not drying. It would dry out some, but was still slightly wet to the touch. Should I use a different icing? Am I doing something wrong? The darker the color, the wetter it was.
Thanks,
Marci!
I think it was putting it in the fridge that did it. I tried airbrushing some frozen BC roses and the color just beaded up on the surface. Airbrushing seems to work best if you do it in layers too especially darker colors. I airbrushed the spiderman cake in my photos by spraying on thin layers of red and letting each layer dry before spraying on the next.
Oooo me Me,, I think I can help.. when I took the airbrushing class, someone asked if the cake could be Frozen after being airbrushed, Our Instructor told us YES but it had to be Wrapped in plastic air tight and the cake had to be thawed to room Temp before removing the plastic or the colors would be wet and or bleed. so I think it is because the icing was cold. I have airbrushed a few cakes and the icing was room temp. and didnt have any problems with it drying.
Hope this helps!
Good Luck!

You have to be careful not to spray the color on too heavily or it will bead up. I've frozen and thawed and airbrushed cake one time and it was a disaster .... the colors ran and I had to do the cake all over again. I swear by my airbrush and projector and don't know what I would do without them
