For my dream job as a cake decorator with a very talented, prominent cake decorator in Ohio. She asked me to make a cake displaying my talent as best I can and bring it to the interview.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO START! I'm thinking I'll definitely cover it with fondant and royal icing flowers but I really don't know what direction to go in...
What do you think a real professional is looking for? This could be my one shot at getting into a career that I'm passionate about and I don't want to blow it. I have until next Tuesday to design and make a cake.

I would kind of go with the types of cakes that she does at her shop. Does she does alot of elegant flowery cakes or does she do funny whimsical party cakes? I would try to follow the theme of her decorating to the best of your ability without making it look like you are copying her work. People don't want to hire employees that know it all, so leave a little room for her to teach you her techniques, but still make it an impressionable cake. Hope this isn't too confusing. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Also, post the cake pic.

Yeah, I would definitely do a cake that would fit in the 'theme' of her cakes, but with your own twist on it. That way she can see that you are capable of 'finishing' up one of her cakes, but also can bring something new to the table.

Congratulations!!! How exciting for you!

As suggested, do something that she would put in her shop. Maybe a spin off , not duplicate, of one of her cakes.

I would be looking for neatness, (Very Important!), smooth fondant (do you know what you are doing), not "overdone", color compatability, (do you have a good eye for color).

If hired, You will most likely be given orders to fill and not be the one "creating" to start out so if you can do a cake like her designs, that will show that you can follow her lead.

Fingers crossed for you!!
