Hello, again!

Does anyone know how to make or have instructions on how to make Puff Bases for cakes? These are the bases used mostly that I have seen with wedding cakes. They are to poofy, fabric covered cake bases. I've attached an image that I copied from earlinescakes so that someone can see it.

I bought those instructions and found them to complicated. But then I don't know that much about sewing. I would love it if Earlene made a dvd.

I also bought the instructions from Earlene but haven't made the puff base yet. The instructions are a little involved and consist of making two things--the fabric cover of washable polyester, and an inner core of wood and styrofoam. I was impresssed because Earlene explained that when a wedding or event is over, the fabric gets machine washed and dried and then the base is ready to go again. She has made them out of white or ivory mostly and uses them over and over again. This seems like it will be less work than doing a fabric base each time. I've done mostly novelty cakes so far, so haven't needed anything like this, but I do plan to get one done sooner or later.

Is it plywood on the bottom with styrofoam on the top? I'd be worried the weight of the cake would squish the styrofoam. What type of styrofoam does she recommend?

First off, I was incorrect about the washing and drying. I looked back at the instructions and the fabric does get machine washed, but then it gets air dried so the gathers don't set. Earlene uses a masonite or wooden board and then 2 inch thick styrofoam from the wholesale florist. The instructions say it needs to be the porous type, not the bead type. A suppport plate goes on top with legs pressed into the styrofoam. The instructions say she has them for 10 and 12 inch cakes and up to 24 inch cakes, so I'd say they must be sturdy. Earlene has centainly done a gazillion cakes and uses these most of the time, so at least for her, they must not squish.

Ah ha! That's the secret, a support plate with the legs! Why didn't I figure that out? Makes a lot more sense now. Thanks!

I want to make up some of those in all the most popular basic wedding colors and I read someones instructions and got confused..lol. I am going to have my sis take a look as she is the logical mind and I am the creative one. I want one in black, silver, gold, white, pink to keep @ my shop, silly Q, but after they are made I guess you can only spot clean them? I mean I know quite a bit of work goes into them so you gotta be ableto reuse em!

They are SO beautiful, aren't they? I think they really make such a big difference, especially for wedding cakes. But, I think I'll ask my friend to help me with the first one, she's the brains in this bunch!
