Ok, you know there are a lot of us out here that may not have an answer for you but it's driving us crazy as to why?
I don't know why not - i think they just dont celebrate some "holidays"- but i couldnt say for sure my only expoerience is that my sisters father in law is JW
and a lady i know who makes wine , maple syrup and baked goods and packages them and sells them for the holidays which woulld kind of be the same thing.
that's a good question, but i don't see why not there are not the one celebrating the occasion they are just providing someone with a service.
but they dont participate with any kind of the celebrating. They dont celebrate anything, and aren't supposed to be seen with those who do..... I know, some of my family are Jehovah Witness' and if its any kind of celebrating its a no go..... thats not to say that they couldn't if they wanted to.... they can be very creative....

Well I know some and there is alot of things that they dont celebrate but they do celebrate some things. Like wedding anniversaries, graduations and I believe some do valentines day. But yea they dont do birthdays and christmas or any christian based holidays.
I have actually met several JW's on this CC site and I have to say they have been extremely helpful, kind, considerate and thoughtful when I have been in contact with them.
Let's all have fun here, not judge what someone does or doesn't do when celebrating!

she's a big girl and she will tell you what she is comfortable or uncomfortable doing.
As long as you and your worker can communicate there should be no tension in the work place.

Can't you just say? "________, I know that you are one of Jehovah Witnesses and I would like to know what are your beliefs and/or practices when it comes to decorating seasonal or holiday cakes?"
What's wrong with that? How could that question hurt her feelings?
This kind of forum topic can really get people going and it may be one of those threads that causes ill feelings amoung your fellow CC friends. I don't want those gals that are JW's to feel uncomfortable.

I think the only one who could really answer your question is your co-worker. I think the wording of your post is why some feel you were being judgemental; and the fact that you put $1 for the price on another topic. If you're on here long enough you will see that there are alot of helpful people on here. We also take offense for each other. Let's see if we can get started on a better foot, so to speak.

I wouldnt see why they couldnt it all depends on that person. I feel that some JW have different believes then others. It is a good question for maybe someone who wants to decorate cakes but also wants to be a JW. I feel that you asked a very good question and that people should answer your question in a nice manner not jump on you or tell you what to do. So lets all try and play nice we are all "Big girls" here. But if you didnt want to upset her then maybe break it in a conversation one day. Good Luck.

Here's my two cents. They don't belive in designating one day to celebrate specific things they belive life should be celebrated every day. My mother-in-law and my daughter-in-laws mother are Jehovas Witness. I would recommend calling your local Jehova's Kingdom Hall and speaking to their pastor if you feel you may offend your co-worker. Most religious people welcome questions that are sincere.(sorry can't spell worth beans) I don't really think decorating cakes falls into a celebrating catergory unless made specifically for a birthday or holiday. People make cakes every day just to eat. No harm in making them pleasing to the eye. Course that is just my opinion.

I think you question was fine. Nobody out there has a clue what the relationship is between you and your coworker may be. I think it was just fine that you want to keep her feelings in mind before asking something that may be seen as personal.

You honestly believe that by asking someone if they will be offended in any way due to religious beliefs is bases for a lawsuit? If you want to honor an employee's rights to practice their own religious beliefs, you need to know what they will or will not participate in. I truly believe that in asking them what they are comfortable with, regarding this matter, is far more easier for the employee and gives them an open invitation to say what they feel, without them having to get the courage to approach their employer, having to state there is some things of which they cannot participate in.
WOW...I didn't think that any ill harm was meant all all by that post. I really thought it was an honest question.
I know it can be very sensitive if you work with/for people who are considered "minorities" in any way...be it religion, race, or what have you. We live in a pretty diverse area here, but I have worked in small businesses where a minority person also worked. And everyone that wasn't minority was totally fine about it, no problems at all....but whenever she did anything wrong, or we had to ask her to change the way she was doing something, she would become very offended and accuse us of criticizing her because of her minority, which was not the case at all. But, it made it so that the supervisor couldn't tell her anything or make any suggestions....that is crazy. One time both she and I had to make a change in the way we were reporting something....same change....It was fine, I didn't see it as critizim at all....but she flew off the handle for about 45 minutes. Whatever.
So, I think testing the water for the answer to this question wasn't out of line....especially if this worker is very sensitive about her religion. You don't want to look stupid either way, really.

....if this person has given no inclination that he or she if does cakes ..that you feel you are unsure if its ok to even ask.....then....why would you ask them to do a cake at all?
Usually when someone is asked to do a cake...wouldnt it be because they have give the idea that they do or like to???

I guessing you own a bakery? If that's the case she must have known this is part of her job discription (I can't spell worth beans too).
You could always say "I have this ______ cake to do, would you want to do it for me?" It could give her the opportunity to mention if she can't do them.
I wouldn't think making the cake would be a problem, that's part of the job. I just think it would be a problem if she celebrated.
This is a very interesting question and I would really like to know that answer. So if and when you find out would you let me know what her feelings about this are. I enjoy finding out about every religion and would like to know more about this.

Sorry everyone. I thought i could go without putting my 2cents in but I have to.
dontwalkaroundthebush- I do understand where you are coming from on this. My family has a couple of different businesses and in the past I ran one on my own. I can understand where you are coming from to turn to this site for some guidance as you are walking a thin line when religion, race or gender come into play. Hats off to you for trying to be a good boss and respect your employees wishes. As for the original question that you had...I have worked for a companythat was about 50% Jehovahs Witness so i have learned a few things. First off they do celebrate things likebaby showers, weddings and anniversaries. So my suggestion to you is that if you are going to have this person help you with a cake have them do those cakes as well as the cakes that are seasonal related (say a blue cake with snowflakes). Another idea would to be that if the cake say is to be covered in red fondant have your assistant do that for you and you can add the holiday touches.
Please everyone dont give a newbie a hard time when she is just trying to do the right thing and is asking for helpful opinions in a sensitive matter.
